Certified Medical Assistant (CMA)

The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) performs both clinical and administrative duties to support providers and ensure efficient patient care within a busy pediatric practice. The CMA works closely with physicians, nurse practitioners, patients, and families to deliver high-quality care while maintaining a positive and professional environment.

Clinical Duties

• Room patients and obtain vital signs, height, weight, and medical histories.
• Prepare patients for examinations and assist providers during procedures.
• Administer vaccines, injections, and medications as directed by the provider and within scope of practice.
• Perform point-of-care testing, including strep, flu, RSV, COVID-19, and urine testing.
• Collect, label, and prepare laboratory specimens for processing.
• Document patient information accurately in the electronic medical record (EMR).
• Provide patient and parent education regarding medications, treatments, and follow-up care.
• Maintain exam rooms and ensure adequate supplies and equipment are available.
• Follow infection control, safety, and HIPAA guidelines.

Administrative Duties

• Assist with patient check-in and check-out as needed.
• Schedule appointments, referrals, and follow-up visits.
• Verify insurance information and obtain authorizations when necessary.
• Answer and route incoming phone calls professionally and efficiently.
• Process prescription refill requests and provider messages.
• Maintain accurate patient records and medical documentation.
• Coordinate communication between patients, families, pharmacies, specialists, and healthcare providers.

• Proficiency with electronic medical records and Microsoft Office applications.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.

Required Education and Experience

• Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program from a recognized institution, such as: Community College Medical Assistant Program Or another accredited Medical Assistant training program
• Minimum of one (1) year of clinical Medical Assistant experience preferred; pediatric experience highly preferred.

Required Certification

• Current Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) credential through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) ; or
• Current Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) credential through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) .
• Certification must have been obtained by successfully passing the national certification examination administered by AAMA or NHA.
• Current CPR/BLS certification required or must be obtained within 90 days of hire.

Physical Demands

• Prolonged periods of standing, walking, and sitting.
• Frequent use of computers and medical equipment.
• Ability to lift and move up to 25 pounds.
• Ability to assist pediatric patients as needed during examinations and procedures.
