Position Overview Primary Assignment: ED Holding Unit Shift: 12-hour day shift Start Times: 0700 or 1900, depending on assignment Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week First-Time Travelers: Accepted Floating: Required; may float for partial shifts within scope of practice EMR: Epic Telemetry Competency: Required Orientation: 2 days of hospital orientation 1 day on the assigned unit Scheduling: Schedule provided 3 weeks at a time, approximately 10 days before the schedule begins Note: The posting lists 110 contract weeks; confirm the actual contract duration with the recruiter. 2. Primary Responsibilities The RN will primarily support the ED Holding Unit, caring for patients awaiting inpatient beds. Assignments may also support GSH, Dally, River North and South, and float pool teams. Care for patients with mixed medical, surgical, PCU and ICU diagnoses. Manage isolation and non-ambulatory patients. Provide medication administration, patient monitoring and patient education. Assist with breaks and patient care when assigned to support the ED Holds area. Remain flexible and resourceful in a fast-paced environment. 3. Minimum Experience Requirements Specialty Required Experience Required Certifications ICU 2 years ICU experience BLS, ACLS, NIHSS PCU / PCU ED Holds 2 years PCU experience BLS, ACLS, NIHSS Med-Surg 2 years acute care experience BLS, NIHSS Important: Confirm which specialty and competency track the candidate will be submitted under, as experience and certification requirements vary by unit. 4. Clinical Skills Required ICU Cardiac rhythm interpretation Ventilator management Invasive line management Ostomy and general drain care Tracheostomy care PCU Cardiac rhythm interpretation Chest tubes, lumbar drains and tracheostomies IV medication titration, including Amiodarone, Cardizem, nitroglycerin, dopamine, dobutamine, insulin and heparin Occasional Cardene administration Med-Surg IV therapy and IV antibiotics PCA management Chest tubes and drains Ostomy care All candidates must demonstrate strong communication and patient teaching skills. 5. Patient Ratios Unit Patient Ratio ICU 1:2 PCU / CCU 1:4 Medical / Surgical 1:5 PCU nurse floated to Med-Surg 1:5 Inpatient Rehab 1:8 team model 6. Unit Information MSICU: 40 beds CVICU: 10 beds PCU: 40 beds 2R PCU Observation: 18 beds CCU: 30 beds Medical: 89 beds Surgical: 55 beds Flex Unit: 9 beds Inpatient Rehab: 47 beds across two floors Patient populations include sepsis, respiratory failure, CHF, COPD, DKA, renal failure, stroke, postoperative cases, oncology, orthopedics and COVID-related conditions. The ICU also manages higher-level therapies such as CRRT, proning and hypothermia protocols. Flap surgery patients are not accepted in the described ICU assignment. 7. Equipment and Support EMR: Epic IV Pumps: Alaris Medication Dispensing: Pyxis Respiratory Therapy: Available 24/7 Hospitalist and Intensivist: Available 24/7 Unit technicians provide support. 8. Scheduling and Facility Rules Call the RMC staffing office 30–45 minutes before the shift to obtain the assignment; this is the preferred method. Report to the correct unit by 0700 or 1900. Do not clock in before 0653 or 1853, respectively. Weekend assignments vary according to staffing needs. No self-scheduling, on-call or holiday requests. Up to 5 days of time off may be approved; additional requests require approval from the nurse manager. Candidates requesting time off must be willing to extend the assignment if required.
