Master Equipment Mechanic District One / District Maintenance / Heartland Operations Center

This position will serve as the lead in ensuring vehicles and equipment are in proper working condition. Key responsibilities include performing skilled mechanical and technical work in the diagnosis, and repair of various automobiles, trucks, and heavy equipment, purchase parts and supplies, complete all required paperwork, process invoices and work orders. This position will also respond to emergency road service calls.

Your specific responsibilities:

Serve as the lead in performing skilled mechanical and technical work in the diagnosis, repair, overhaul and replacement of gasoline or diesel engines, transmissions, clutches, brakes, electrical systems, hydraulic systems and other parts and major components in automobiles, trucks, heavy equipment, and other related equipment. Field test vehicles and equipment to ensure the repairs have been satisfactorily completed. Only field test and operate equipment requiring a CDL upon receipt of the required CDL instructional permit or CDL license. Repairs, changes, and balances tires on automotive and heavy equipment. Plan and schedule shop workload for the mechanics and provide customer service support by communicating with internal customers and vendors, in the absence of the Shop Supervisor. Oversees proper processing of invoices and completion of required paperwork and work orders and review shop work order data in the Department's current fleet software/database. Instructs and aids other mechanics or helpers in the repair of automobiles, trucks, and other equipment. Perform preventative maintenance work to ensure equipment is maintained and in proper working order. Perform periodic maintenance, repair, and preparation of seasonal equipment. Comply with all waste generation, storage, and disposal laws, rules, and policies. Assist in the maintenance of proper documentation of all waste generation and disposal activities. Elevate questions/items of concern to Shop Supervisor. Submit requests for parts and supplies. Responsible for properly tracking and reporting time charged on various work activities and completing shop work orders. Purchase parts and shop supplies as P-card holder and is accountable for proper processing of invoices and completion of required paperwork and work orders. Operates personal computers and printers for processing warehouse commodity issue tickets and work orders. Respond to emergency road service calls and perform minor repairs to vehicles and equipment. Cleans up after repairs and returns tools to their proper location. Performs minor welding, paint and body repairs as needed.

The successful candidate will have the following required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Knowledge of: Repair and maintenance of automobiles, trucks, small engines and heavy equipment Diagnostic equipment The use of repair manuals; purchasing rules and regulations All waste generation, storage, and disposal laws, rules, and policies Skills in: Providing instruction to mechanics and helpers The use of hand tools and mechanical equipment Replacing, repairing and installing various components and accessories such as radios, heaters, windshield wipers, etc Documenting work performed and materials used on work orders Performing preventive maintenance on vehicles and various equipment Customer service Ability to: Interpret specialized automotive testing and monitoring equipment Work independently Operate motor vehicles Troubleshoot automotive and equipment problems Perform a variety of gasoline or diesel repair and maintenance Assist in body and fender repair work Lift 50 pounds, climb, squat, stoop, push, pull, crawl and bend Use appropriate safety equipment Follow oral and written instructions Communicate effectively verbally and in writing Perform minor welding Operate and perform pre-trip/post-trip inspections required on Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) with Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) of 26,000 lbs. or more

Other job-related requirements:

Due to the nature of this position, the incumbent must respond to emergencies when necessary. While on-duty status, the position's incumbent must be readily available to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of Commercial Driver's License the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions. Obtains certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) Intermediate Level within one year and maintains a Valid Class "B" CDL is required. Responsible for adhering to the provisions and requirements of section of 215.422, F.S., related State Comptrollers' rules, and the Department of Transportation's invoice processing and warrant distribution procedures. Employee will be required to be responsive to emergency situations within a very short timeframe and serve in the Transportation Emergency Management Team (TEMT).

Minimum qualifications:

Possess a High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency and three years of experience as a mechanic in passenger vehicle and heavy equipment repair and maintenance. An additional year of experience, for a total of four years' experience, in passenger vehicle or heavy equipment repair and maintenance is a substitute for a High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency. Possess a valid Class "E" driver's license and obtain a Class "B" CDL Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to position and obtain a valid Class "B" CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment to the position. This position requires a valid Class E driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department's Driver's Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following: three (3) or more moving violations in the past three (3) years that accumulate three (3) or more points per violation; any two (2) convictions of reckless driving in the past three (3) years; a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past three (3) years; and a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction, in the past four (4) years. Your driving record will be reviewed and the status of your driver license confirmed. In order to be eligible for hire into a position requiring a Commercial Driver License (CDL), applicants must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Drug and Alcohol (FMCSA) Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a pre-employment query. Click here to register for the Clearinghouse. A mandatory drug screening will be performed on the successful applicant. To be considered for employment, applicants must meet the qualifications outlined in Title 49 CFR Part 391.11. Applicants hired for this position with a Class E license will be required to obtain a Commercial Learners Permit (CLP) within 60 days of appointment, attend CDL training and successfully pass the CDL licensing test and obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months after appointment to the position. Once the CLP is obtained, candidates must register with the FMCSA Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a query. Upon hire, this position also requires the applicant to have an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department's Driver's Record Requirements Policy. The costs of the initial CDL training and initial testing will be paid by the Department, subject to available funding. An employee will be given three chances to pass the license requirements. The employee will be responsible for paying for the initial CLP fee, as well as any additional training and re-test costs, and the CDL fee. If the employee voluntarily separates from the Department within two (2) years of obtaining their CDL, the employee will be responsible for paying the costs of the initial training and testing.
