Assistant Professor (CHS)
The Department of Surgery at The University of Wisconsin is seeking an exceptional academic surgeon with a clinical practice focused in Breast Surgery to join our Division of Surgical Oncology. Candidates should be board-eligible or board-certified in General Surgery. Completion of a breast surgery or surgical oncology fellowship is strongly preferred but not required.
Candidates should be capable of evaluating and managing benign and malignant disease of the breast. Candidates should be comfortable engaging with a cohesive, multi-disciplinary team that includes other breast surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, breast radiologists, reconstructive surgeons, and pathologists.
The selected finalist will have excellent communication skills and is a reliable team player. They will be able to demonstrate a track record of clinical excellence and academic contributions through education and/or research.
Applicants for this position will be considered for the following titles: Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor on the Clinical Health Science (CHS) track, and Clinical Assistant Professor, Clinical Associate Professor, and Clinical Professor on the Clinical Teaching (CT) Track. The title is determined by the experience and qualifications of the finalist.
This position is full time.
This position requires work to be completed onsite, at a designated campus work location.
The selected candidate will be required to pass an initial caregiver check to be eligible for employment under the Wisconsin Caregiver Law and then every two years.
Research
Support for research and/or programmatic participation/development will also be considered.
Service and Teaching
Teach medical students, residents, and fellows
Participate in administrative and committee work to support the clinical and scholarly missions of UW Health and the School of Medicine and Public Health. An essential part of these duties will be working in a collegial relationship with other faculty members.
Clinical
Elective inpatient and outpatient practice will primarily occur at University Hospital and Eastpark Medical Center. A new state-of-the-art outpatient clinic at the Eastpark Medical Center is an outpatient clinic that opened in 2025 and includes multi-disciplinary breast. UW Health is accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers and the Commission on Cancer.
School of Medicine and Public Health / Department of Surgery / Division of Surgical Oncology
The Division of Surgical Oncology at the University of Wisconsin includes 15 full-time academic faculty surgeons who provide patient-centered, multidisciplinary care to patients diagnosed with cancer. The Division is comprised of two sections: Gastrointestinal Oncology and Breast/Cutaneous Oncology. The division also includes 9 advanced practice providers who provide inpatient, outpatient, and OR support. Education within the Division includes a commitment to medical students and General Surgery residents and an ACGME-approved two-year Surgical Oncology fellowship. The fellowship has been approved since 2016 and includes 1 fellow at a time. Operative cases, as well as inpatient services, are assisted by one of the 70 residents or fellows in our training program along with the inpatient Surgical Oncology APP's.
The Section of Breast and Cutaneous Oncology includes six surgeons. In addition, we have three independent, highly functioning Advanced Practice Providers who are an integral part of the UW Health Breast Center team, and see benign, high risk, and survivorship patients daily to improve surgeon's efficiency. Both the Breast and Cutaneous Oncology surgical programs are integrated within highly functional multidisciplinary teams, with weekly tumor boards, subspecialty medical oncology, radiation oncology, and breast imaging, genetic counselors, and patient navigation. On call services for breast and cutaneous oncology patients is shared among our Breast and Cutaneous Oncology section faculty. Candidates will be joining an established clinical program and will be clinically busy from day 1.
The Wisconsin Department of Surgery is one of the leading surgical programs in the nation, excelling in patient care, surgical education, and surgical research. We are composed of more than 140 full-time faculty across 10 divisions and nearly 200 additional staff who support our mission. Our surgeons perform almost 20,000 operations per year for pediatric and adult patients. Training the next generation of surgeons and clinician-scientists is integral in our department, with more than 100 residents and fellows trained each year. The department is consistently among the top surgery programs with extramural research funding, ranking seventh nationally in NIH funding over the last 10 years.
Research: The Department of Surgery supports basic, translational and clinical outcomes research. One example is the Wisconsin Surgical Outcomes Research Program (WiSOR), which provides support, resources, and a collaborative environment to facilitate surgical health services research at the University of Wisconsin. The Department's Office of Clinical Research provides clinical trial coordinator support for Clinical Trials as well regulatory support for research, and the grants management team provides comprehensive pre-award to post-award support. The Surgical Collaborative of Wisconsin also provides access to a network of surgeons throughout the state, and this platform provides opportunities for collaborative quality improvement that improves the care of surgical patients throughout the state and region.
Education: The Department of Surgery is a leader in surgical education and surgical education research. The department includes three residencies and nine fellowship training programs with robust support for these efforts. The department is also committed to surgical education research which combines the efforts of educators, surgeons, and learning scientists both at and outside the university.

Candidate is required to have a Wisconsin medical license by the appointment start date.
Board certification or board eligibility from the American Board of Surgery, American Osteopathic Board of Surgery, or equivalent is required by the appointment start date.
Must be eligible for enrollment as a billing provider and for all necessary hospital privileges by the appointment start date.
Completion of a fellowship in Surgical Oncology and/or Breast Surgery by appointment start date is strongly preferred
For an appointment at Associate Professor or Professor rank on CHS Track, candidates will meet criteria established by the department and as outlined in the School of Medicine and Public Health guidelines for promotion or appointment to Associate or Professor on the CHS Track.
For an appointment at Clinical Associate Professor, or Clinical Professor rank on CT Track, candidates will meet criteria established by the department and as outlined in the School of Medicine and Public Health guidelines for promotion or appointment to Associate or Professor on the CT Track.
