2026-2027 | Literacy Specialist

Boston Prep

As a Literacy Specialist at Boston Prep, you will design and deliver targeted literacy interventions for middle‑school students, coordinate library services, lead the DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) Block, and collaborate with MTSS teams to support students who need additional help. You will contribute to a welcoming, inclusive learning environment that promotes growth for all students. Essential Job Functions Direct Literacy Intervention Instruction (25%) Provide evidence‑based literacy interventions to students reading below grade level. Use diagnostic data (i‑Ready, MCAS, interim assessments) to design plans and monitor progress. Maintain accurate records and report student growth to leadership and the MTSS team. Collaborate with classroom teachers to align intervention work with core literacy instruction. DEAR Block Coordination (10%) Lead planning, implementation, and continuous improvement of the school’s DEAR Block. Deliver professional development on DEAR best practices to faculty. Monitor effectiveness through observations, surveys, and data; recommend program adjustments. Coordinate with the library to secure culturally responsive texts. Library Management (50%) Oversee daily library operations: collection, cataloging, circulation, and space organization. Curate a diverse, high‑quality collection that supports literacy across genres. Promote reading culture via book talks, displays, and programming. Manage the library budget and coordinate book orders with the CAO. MTSS Team Participation (15%) Attend MTSS meetings to review data and discuss intervention effectiveness. Contribute expertise to school‑wide systems for at‑risk student support. Collaborate with special education staff, counselors, and administrators for coordinated support. Compensation Salary range: $74,406 – $125,759. Qualifications bachelor’s degree required; master’s in Education, Literacy, Reading, or a related field preferred. valid Massachusetts teaching license (English Language Arts, Reading Specialist, or similar credential preferred). 3‑5 years of experience teaching literacy or delivering literacy interventions to middle or high school students. Demonstrated skill in evidence‑based literacy instruction (phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, writing strategies). Strong data‑literacy skills using assessment data to inform instruction and monitor growth. Experience in an urban public school setting; charter school experience a plus. Preferred Qualifications Certification in reading instruction (e.g., Wilson Reading System, Orton‑Gillingham, LETRS). Experience coordinating literacy programs or initiatives at the school level. Library science coursework or experience with library management systems. Familiarity with MTSS frameworks and collaborative multi‑disciplinary teams. Bilingual Spanish/English a plus. Core Competencies Data‑Driven Instruction : Analyze literacy data, identify patterns, and adjust instruction to maximize growth. Relationship Building : Build trusting relationships with students who face literacy challenges. Program Coordination : Manage multiple initiatives (DEAR Block, library operations) simultaneously. Collaboration : Work effectively with teachers, administrators, and support staff to create coherent literacy systems. Cultural Responsiveness : Select texts and design instruction that reflect students’ diverse backgrounds. Continuous Improvement : Seek feedback, reflect on practice, and refine literacy programming based on outcomes. Success Metrics Increase percentage of students meeting “Meeting or Exceeding Expectations” on MCAS ELA. Improve students’ meeting the College Board’s EWR benchmark on the SAT. Documented growth on i‑Ready diagnostics and interim assessments for intervention groups. High‑quality implementation of the DEAR Block measured by observations, engagement data, and teacher feedback. Increased library circulation and student engagement with independent reading.
