The Marquette Central Student Services Adviser provides cross-functional counseling and advice on complex enrollment and student financial issues within the Marquette Central Student Services unit. Advising services are provided to the university’s diverse populations of current and prospective students and families in the areas of registration, academic records, financial aid, student employment and student accounts. Additionally, this position handles complex situations when discussing both academic success and financial matters. Duties and Responsibilities 1. Counseling and Advising Counsel, investigate, problem-solve, and resolve questions and issues from prospective, and current students, parents, faculty, third parties, and the public. Maintain a continuous focus on academic and financial wellness, student retention and graduation rates. Provide in-depth financial aid information and assistance regarding the aid application process ( FAFSA ), eligibility including the financial aid offer, deadlines, explain various loan terms and conditions, professional judgement, scholarship renewal, disbursement policies, satisfactory academic progress, student employment and study away policies. Counsel students and families regarding their payment rights and responsibilities throughout the student life cycle. This includes explaining billing statements, payment options, billing timelines, and 1098T’s. Assist students with registration logistics, navigating CheckMarq, forms transcripts orders, and academic policies. Adjust financial aid offers following university policies and procedures. Adhere to all federal, state and university regulations and procedures when counseling and advising. Ability to advise students and families on the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 ( FERPA ) regulations. Assist students with applying for campus jobs and completing campus hire paperwork. Appropriately refer students and families to other campus resources. Communicate on a regular basis with individuals and groups at all levels of the institution to provide information, respond to questions, and resolve and/or provide resources, and solutions to problems. Exercise discretion and independent judgment in making exceptions to policies such as waiving late fees, removing/suspending registration holds, or removing other student obstacles on a case-by-case basis. Bring student issues to resolution efficiently and elevate issues appropriately to supporting offices and/or leadership as needed. 2. System Utilization, Account Management, and Data Processing Efficiently utilize multiple technological and student-serving platforms, software applications, and communication modalities. Accurately and efficiently review account information and document all interactions within appropriate technological platforms and software. Trouble shoot problems or concerns regarding billing, academic records, registration, and financial aid. Utilize diligence when reviewing account or comment activity. Distribute, collect and review required documents for accuracy and completeness. Process account history requests, enrollment verifications and official transcripts. Assist families with Marquette Monthly Payment Plan. 3. Presentations, Projects, Outreach and Training Deliver financial aid presentations to prospective students and families. Ensure presentation materials contain accurate and relevant information. Assist with university sponsored events such as orientation by providing presentations, individual counseling, and general information. Perform proactive student outreach and counseling regarding financial aid next steps and past due balances. Participate in on-going training, both as the trainer and trainee to meet the required knowledge of federal, state, and institutional policies and procedures. Participate in the annual review of Marquette Central policies, procedures, Marquette Central website, the preparation of student service publications, notices and special correspondence to various groups 4. Liaison Function as a liaison between students, parents, and various university offices. Advocate on behalf of the student when needed. Serve on various internal and external committees.
