Under supervision of a physician, performs echocardiograms on fetal and pediatric patients. Performs routine and emergent complex congenital echocardiograms, as requested by a physician and in accordance with standard practices. Procedures include fetal, pediatric, neonatal, adult congenital, transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiograms. Patient population includes fetal, pediatric, neonates and adults. Provide training and oversight to pediatric echocardiographers in the areas of pediatric and fetal echocardiography. Operates required equipment to obtain optimal diagnostic recordings, utilizes ancillary devices such as transducers, audio‑ and video‑recorders, and computer systems. Maintains equipment in working order. Responsibilities Under supervision of a physician, performs echocardiograms on fetal patients. Perform routine and emergency fetal echocardiograms as requested by a physician and in accordance with standard practices. Use independent judgment and systematic problem‑solving methods to produce high‑quality diagnostic information. Under supervision of a physician, performs echocardiograms on pediatric patients. Perform routine and emergent complex congenital echocardiograms as requested by a physician and in accordance with standard practices. Procedures include transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiograms for the neonatal, pediatric, and adult congenital populations. Use independent judgment and systematic problem‑solving methods to produce high‑quality diagnostic information. Provide training to echocardiographers in the area of pediatric and fetal echocardiography. Acquire and analyze data obtained using ultrasound and related diagnostic technologies. Provide a summary of findings to the physician to aid in patient diagnosis and management. Complete all documentation. Input all preliminary reports and required measurements into PACS. Utilize Epic to input appropriate billing information. Educate patient and family/caregiver regarding the echocardiography exam. Explain the procedure and expectations. Help patient with gowning and maneuvering into appropriate position for exam; apply EKG stickers for monitoring during the exam. Obtain patient identifiers at the start of the visit. Review the patient’s medical record for completion, obtain history of symptoms and necessary information for performance of diagnostic procedures. Prepare patient records for review and interpretation by physician, including selection, recording, and cross‑reference of significant or representative studies. Provide accurate documentation of patient care on appropriate forms, according to Connecticut Children’s and department protocols. Maintain equipment in working order, making minor adjustments and repairs, performing routine cleaning and preventive maintenance; report any malfunction to the department manager. Maintain a clean environment for patients and staff. Prepare the exam area. Restock supplies as needed. Input preliminary reports and measurements for all outside studies. Burn discs and mail to outside institutions as requested. Fax finalized echo reads to appropriate organizations. Track billing sheets for completion by reading providers for outside studies. May provide echocardiograms at outside locations such as healthcare systems outside of Connecticut Children’s as assigned. May transport patients as necessary. Performs other job‑related duties as assigned. Qualifications Education And/or Experience Required High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent. Completion of an accredited Cardiac Ultrasound program that includes clinical and didactic education in pediatric echocardiography. Minimum of 6 months experience in fetal echocardiography with a minimum of 2 years experience in pediatric echocardiography OR Completion of internal fetal training program through Connecticut Children’s with minimum of 2 years experience in pediatric echocardiography. License and/or Certifications Required Registered with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) in echocardiography (CCI) RDCS (AE) or RCS. Registered with ARDMS or CCI in pediatric echocardiography RDCS(PE) or RCCS. Registered with ARDMS in fetal echocardiography as RDCS (Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (FE)). Current Basic Life Support certification (BLS) in accordance with American Heart Association standards. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required Knowledge Structure and function of the cardiovascular system, including simple and complex congenital heart abnormalities. Cardiovascular principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment involved in the performance of all above. Skills Demonstrated skills in ultrasound physics and instrumentation, pathophysiology of pediatric cardiovascular disease, therapeutic measures, two‑dimensional and M‑mode echocardiography, cardiac Doppler. Abilities Perform all echocardiograms and cardiac ultrasound procedures. Accurately and clearly document the echo procedure & results. Function as an efficient team member with the physician & the patient. Understand the physical and psychological needs of the patient. Working knowledge of safety procedures as required.
