This position focuses on ensuring patients are accurately scheduled and registered for various clinical and hospital services, supporting them throughout their care journey including financial responsibilities.
Job Summary As a Patient Access Specialist I, you will manage patient scheduling and registration using specialized software, verify insurance and benefits, and handle referrals and pre-authorizations. You will conduct registration interviews, perform point-of-service collections, and manage daily cash drawer operations. Your communication skills will be essential as you operate a multi-line phone system, respond to patient inquiries, and maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times. Key Responsibilities- Schedule and register patients accurately, ensuring data integrity including patient identification and insurance verification.
- Verify referrals and pre-authorizations for services.
- Conduct patient registration interviews prior to visits.
- Collect patient financial responsibilities such as co-payments and co-insurances, and manage payment receipts and cash drawer.
- Operate multi-line telephone systems to handle incoming calls professionally and efficiently.
- Respond to patient inquiries, ensuring comfort, dignity, and confidentiality.
- Complete daily assignments and general administrative tasks including mail processing.
- Research workflow improvements and participate in special projects as assigned.
- High School Diploma or equivalent required; Associate's Degree preferred.
- Healthcare experience is preferred.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and healthcare revenue cycle is advantageous.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is encouraged.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment while providing exceptional customer service with a positive and professional demeanor.
- Proficiency in insurance verification processes using multiple online and telephone systems.
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and various office equipment.
- Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and prioritization skills.
- Calm and professional under pressure, adaptable to changing workloads and tasks.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, with sensitivity to patients' emotional and social needs.
- Discretion in handling confidential information and maintaining accurate documentation.
- Basic math skills and understanding of healthcare revenue functions.
- Ability to maintain a clean, organized, and professional work environment.
- Team player with collaborative and constructive engagement.
Physical Requirements Includes occasional lifting and carrying of items up to 35 lbs, frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, and stooping. Normal vision, hearing, and speech capabilities are required. Work Environment This part-time role involves 8-hour shifts within a 40-hour workweek, located in a regional healthcare setting in the Pacific Northwest.
