Hourly - Senior Preparator

Overview The City of Walnut Creek seeks to hire an hourly Senior Preparator to join the Arts + Recreation Department’s Bedford Gallery. This is a per diem, or “as needed”, position for exhibition installation and deinstallation. There will be approximately eight to ten full weeks of work over four exhibitions per year. Bedford Gallery is a contemporary visual arts space dedicated to providing opportunities to learn about the visual arts through exhibitions and programs that are varied, accessible, challenging, and educational. The Bedford is housed in the Lesher Center for the Arts, and presents four exhibitions per year, related programs, daily school tours, and community workshops that reflect and engage a diverse audience across the region. Responsibilities Install and de-install artworks for exhibitions. Repair, paint, and move walls. Safely receive and handle crates, boxes, packing materials, and artworks. Assist with compiling artwork condition reports. Unpack and repack artworks safely for exhibition, storage, shipping, and off-site deliveries. Place artworks of various weights and dimensions in the gallery prior to hanging and installation. Transport art to and from the gallery in City vehicles. Light and label exhibitions. Assist with cleaning and organizing (paint, tools, installation supplies, etc.). Work on other gallery programming projects as needed. Experience The ideal candidate’s application demonstrates four years of art handling experience in a gallery or museum and includes excellent references. Applications that are incomplete or show no prior museum or gallery experience will not be considered. Special Requirements Possession of, or ability to obtain prior to employment, a valid Class C California Driver's License, and a good driving record. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Working knowledge of safe and proper art handling, packing, and installation methods suitable to a wide range of media. Ability to drive a 26-foot box truck with prior experience. Ability to excel in a detail-oriented work environment. Professional demeanor, positive, and upbeat attitude. Knowledge of, and passion for, fine art. Ability to follow instructions and work independently. Work experience with exhibition and registrar manuals. Basic maintenance and building skills including carpentry, rigging, wall repair, painting (walls and pedestals), fixture fabrication, and picture framing. Ability to work with adhesive vinyl signage and object labels. Physical Requirements Essential physical duties for this position include (and are not limited to): Carrying and using equipment, such as operating ladders and platform lifts, and safely lifting and moving boxes, art, and tools of varied weight and dimension; Off-loading crates from trucks and safely moving them around the gallery with and without assistance; Bending, stooping, standing, twisting, lifting, reaching, and sitting for extended periods of time.
