Mainframe Systems Programmer/Mainframe Database Administrator (DBA)

The Mainframe Systems Programmer / Mainframe DBA is responsible for the installation, configuration, maintenance, performance tuning, security, and availability of IBM z/OS mainframe systems and associated database technologies. This role plays a critical part in ensuring the stability, performance, and reliability of mission-critical enterprise applications supported by mainframe environments.

Key Responsibilities

Mainframe Systems Programming
  • Install, configure, maintain, and upgrade IBM z/OS operating systems and related system software
  • Manage and support core mainframe subsystems including JES2/JES3, SMP/E, RACF, TSO/ISPF, CICS, IMS, DB2, and system utilities
  • Monitor system performance and capacity; perform tuning and optimization
  • Implement and maintain system automation and scheduling tools (e.g., CA-7, Control-M)
  • Support disaster recovery, business continuity, and system failover testing
  • Diagnose and resolve complex system-level issues and performance problems
  • Apply vendor patches, PTFs, and software upgrades following change management procedures
Database Administration (DBA)
  • Install, configure, and maintain DB2 for z/OS (and/or IMS DB) environments
  • Perform database design reviews, schema changes, and capacity planning
  • Monitor database performance and conduct tuning activities
  • Manage backup, recovery, and disaster recovery strategies
  • Implement database security controls, access permissions, and auditing
  • Support data migrations, application releases, and testing activities
  • Troubleshoot database availability and integrity issues
Required Skills & Qualifications

Technical Skills
  • Strong experience with IBM z/OS mainframe environments
  • Hands-on expertise with DB2 for z/OS (IMS experience is a plus)
  • Proficiency with SMP/E, JCL, and system-level batch processing
  • Knowledge of RACF security administration
  • Experience with performance monitoring and tuning tools (e.g., RMF, SMF)
  • Familiarity with mainframe storage systems (DASD, tape management)
  • Understanding of enterprise change management and ITIL practices
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field
    OR equivalent professional experience
Professional Experience
  • 5+ years of experience in mainframe systems programming and/or mainframe DBA roles
  • Experience supporting 24x7 mission-critical production environments
  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional team
Preferred Qualifications
  • IBM certifications (e.g., z/OS, DB2 for z/OS)
  • Experience with modernization initiatives (mainframe-to-cloud integration, APIs, DevOps)
  • Familiarity with tools such as Endevor, Changeman, File-AID, ISPF utilities
  • Knowledge of compliance standards (SOX, PCI, HIPAA, etc.)

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation discipline
