Essential Job Duties:Daily task scheduling, maintaining calendar(s) of animal care tasksAccountable for the timely and accurate completion of all daily tasksFeeding/watering, daily health care and medicating of animals, and cleaning dutiesRegularly working all animal care shifts alongside the caregiving team; shift times may start as early as 6am or end as late as 9pm Timely and thorough follow-up of all animal care medical alertsUpdating shift procedures and protocols as neededReviewing and updating treatment and feed sheets weeklyReviewing and approving timesheets and PTO requestsAssisting with and/or leading veterinary visits as neededTransporting animals for rescues and/or veterinary appointments as neededMeeting weekly with the RVT and Animal Care DirectorLeading weekly animal care department meetings, recording meeting minutesConsulting with the RVT on all health check findings weeklyOverseeing the onboarding, training, and scheduling of all animal care staff, interns, and volunteersMaintaining accurate records of animal care staff performance throughout the year to complete 6-month check-ins and annual performance reviewsIdentifying and ensuring completion of additional animal care projects, goals, etc. On-Call Job Duties:Must be able to reside in employer-provided onsite housing.Participate in a rotating after-hours, weekend, and holiday on-call schedule, ensuring there is always designated onsite coverage for animal care emergencies.Respond promptly and independently to after-hours animal care and facility emergencies while serving as the designated on-call employee, including duties such as bottle-feeding infant animals, monitoring and caring for sick or injured animals, and addressing other urgent operational needs.Provide coverage for animal care shifts as needed during staff illnesses, vacations, or other unforeseen absences.Qualifications:A strong commitment to Animal Places mission of veganism and animal rightsAt least 2 years of animal rescue/shelter/sanctuary experience required1-2 years of supervisory experience preferredStrong leadership skills and ability to effectively lead animal care staff in day-to-day operations while creating a cohesive and positive work environmentExcellent animal behavior and observation skillsExtensive problem-solving skills and initiative; ability to remain calm in challenging situations and/or emergencies Extremely self-motivated with a team player mindsetEager to interact with the general public and volunteersCapable of working outdoors in ALL weather conditions; Grass Valley typically has cold/wet winters, and very hot/dry summers with regular threat(s) of wildfireCapable of lifting 40-50 pounds and performing strenuous/manual laborWilling to work on weekends/holidays/varying shift times as needed to provide appropriate shift coverageValid driver's license and good driving record (subject to verification)Comfortable driving large vehicles, including stock trailers and Sprinter vansVegan lifestyle required to live onsite; no animal products may be brought onto the sanctuary or into the housing units by employees or their guestsHours/Days: 40 hours/week, 8 hours/day, currently Tuesday-Saturday. Schedule subject to change at any time. Required to work most weekends and holidays. Live-in staff are required to be on-call 1-2 times per week, potentially more if the schedule demands. When on-call, staff are required to stay onsite with radio on and must be ready to handle any late night or early morning animal emergencies. Housing: This position includes required onsite housing as part of the total compensation package. The current onsite accommodation is a one-bedroom cottage with a small private yard. The cottage is limited to occupancy by one person. All utilities, including heating, air conditioning, electricity, water, garbage service, and Wi-Fi, are included, along with access to a shared laundry facility with washer and dryer. Companion animals may be permitted with prior approval from the Animal Care Director.
