Emergency Room Job Summary:
ER Nurses are the first line of defense when responding to patient injuries, trauma, or allergic reactions. They are always prepared to respond to emergencies, assist doctors in emergency medical care, and ensure a high quality of nursing standards are maintained, among other duties. Moreover, ER Nurses are required to remain calm under pressure, display sound decision-making skills and be attentive to patient needs. Emergency Room Registered Nurse works as part of a team with physicians, other nurses and healthcare professionals to provide care and monitor health conditions. Emergency rooms are the first line of defense for accidents, allergic reactions, and any number of urgent medical care. ER nurses work to quickly assess the needs of each patient, prioritize care based on its critical nature; work to stabilize a patient, and treat the problem.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
· Oversee the daily workflow of the department.
· Promote the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
· Assess the acuity of care required by patients and develop staffing plan for shift based on patient acuity, patient census and available staff.
· Serve as a resource to staff for solving clinical problems.
· Assist staff to efficiently utilize staffing resources to meet patient care requirements and other professional responsibilities.
· Work collaboratively with nursing and ancillary staff to solve problems in a fair, consistent manner.
· Provide support, guidance, and feedback to staff.
· Identify and communicate staff needs for continuing education to the Education Director.
· Assist staff to interpret change in a positive manner.
· Assist staff to provide a safe work environment for patient care.
· Assist in the preparation and implementation of the annual goals for the department.
· Keep professionally current, by attending continuing education programs, seminars, workshops, Supervisor Conference Group Meetings, and/or independent research reading.
· Performs other related duties as assigned.
Duties and Responsibilities :
- Being ready to respond and equipped to deal with a medical emergency.
- Quickly assessing patient needs.
- Treating critical injuries, allergic reactions, and trauma.
- Assisting with minor medical operations.
- Cleaning wounds.
- Drawing blood.
- Maintaining emergency room care standards.
- Displaying strong decision-making skills in emergency scenarios.
- Complete annual skills check list.
- Attend annual skills day.
- Maintaining accurate, complete health care records and reports.
- Administering medications to patients and monitoring them for side effects and reactions.
- Recording patient vital signs and medical information.
- Monitoring, reporting, and recording symptoms or changes in patient conditions.
- Assessing, implementing, planning, or evaluating patient nursing care plans by working with healthcare team members.
- Modifying patient health treatment plans as indicated by patient conditions and responses.
· Observing and interpreting patient’s symptoms and communicating them to physicians.
- Collaborating with physicians and nurses to devise individualized care plans for patients.
· Observe and interpret patient’s symptoms and communicate them to physicians.
· Perform routine procedures (blood pressure measurements, administering injections etc.) and document in EMR.
· Adjust and administer patient’s medication and provide treatments according to physician’s orders.
· Inspect the facilities and act to maintain excellent hygiene and safety (decontaminating equipment, sanitizing surfaces)
· Fill out daily logs (crash carts and refrigerator checks)
· Provide instant medical care in emergencies.
· Guide LPNs in assignments
· Foster a supportive and compassionate environment to care for patients and their families.
· Expand knowledge and capabilities by attending educational workshops, conferences etc.
· Identify patients’ care requirements, focus on their needs and act on them.
· Performs appropriate treatments as ordered by physicians in an accurate and timely manner.
· Nurture a compassionate environment by providing psychological support.
· Resolve or report on patients’ needs or problems.
· Prepare patients for examinations and perform routine diagnostic checks (monitor pulse, blood pressure and temperature, O2 saturation, etc.)
· Monitor and record patient’s condition and document provided care services.
· Coordinate workloads.
· Follow care regulations and standards.
· Work within and cooperate with a multidisciplinary team.
· Report’s patient condition to appropriate personnel during each shift change
· May float among various departments as needed.
· Punctual for shifts.

· Excellent knowledge of nursing care methods and procedures
· Ability to identify when a patient is going bad and contact the Physician in a timely manner.
· In-depth knowledge of health and safety guidelines and procedures (sanitation, decontamination etc.) and willingness to always follow them.

· Communicates patient’s condition to appropriate personnel during each shift.
· Maintains current competency in nursing specialty by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies and other education provided by facility.
· Assess patients’ pain levels and sedation requirements.
· Prioritize nursing care for assigned critically ill patients based on assessment data and identified needs.
· Assess family adaptation levels and coping skills to determine whether intervention is needed.
· Acting as a patient advocate.
· Providing education and support to patient families.
· Follows facility and OSHA safety rules and procedures.
· Respects cultural and religious practices of patients.
· Upholds HIPAA regulations.
Education, Certifications, and Licensing:
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) (Pals) Certification.
- MOAB
- Able to work under high pressure.
- Attention to detail.
- Good organizational skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication.
- VAN certification
- TNCC preferred
- AIDET training provided by MGH
- RN license & College diploma
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to help a patient move from one bed to another or walk to the bathroom, turn patient (side to side) using safe lifting techniques to protect the
patient from injury.
- Must also be able to bend over to grab items off the floor or connect medical equipment.
- Must be able to lift 25 pounds.
- Ability to stand or walk for extended periods of time, as well as lift patients and medical equipment.
- · Ability to demonstrate resilience in emotionally difficult situations.
Safety Practices:
· Consistently follows all established Safety procedures, incident/accident protocol and precautions or universal precautions when performing duties relating to work area.
· Always follows good infection control practices and is familiar with Infection control policies, procedures PPE guidelines and guidance relevant to area of work.
· Practices proper body mechanics and ergonomics always.
· Follows established plans, policies, and procedures during emergencies, such as fire evacuation, fire drills and actively participates in emergency exercises/disasters etc.
· Reports on all Life Safety maintenance issues, defective equipment, etc. through the Environmental Services work order system.
