Assistant City Attorney IV - Litigation

About the Position The City of Phoenix Law Department comprises two divisions: the City Attorney’s Office, which represents the City in civil matters, and the City Prosecutor’s Office, which handles the prosecution of misdemeanor crimes committed in Phoenix. Assistant City Attorneys in the Civil Division work in one of six areas: Public Safety, Litigation, Transportation, Human Resources, City Services, and Community Development. The Civil Division is seeking an Assistant City Attorney IV for the Litigation Section to represent and advise various City departments and employees in litigation matters in both federal and state court from pre‑litigation claims through appeals. Responsibilities

• Represent City departments and employees in litigation, including investigation, discovery and dispute resolution, dispositive motions, mediations, settlement conferences, pre‑trial motions, arbitrations, jury trials, and appeals.
• Manage multiple cases simultaneously and present cases to the City’s Claims Committee and City Council.
• Work independently under guidance of the Assistant Chief Counsel and may be reassigned as needed.
• Maintain court obligations, City Council or City management meetings, and other in‑office obligations.
• Eligible to work up to four days a week in remote telework with one in‑office day per week at the discretion of the City Attorney.

Ideal Candidate Knowledge of municipal litigation, including pre‑litigation, discovery, motion writing, arbitration, and appeals. High professional and ethical standing in the legal community. Willingness to work extended hours and flexible schedule. Salary Pay Range: $126,734.40 – $177,444.80 annually. Minimum Qualifications Four years of experience as a practicing civil or criminal attorney. Experience in municipal law, including drafting and negotiating contracts. Significant client contact; primary responsibility for civil litigation and motion practice. One year of government law practice and knowledge of relevant legal subject matter. Graduation from an accredited law school. Admission to the Arizona State Bar. Alternative combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted. All finalists subject to a criminal background check. Preferred Qualifications Experience litigating cases in both state and federal courts. Experience through all stages of a case, including drafting and arguing motions, depositions, evidence preparation. Experience with municipal law statutes such as notice of claims, immunities, and public‑records matters. Experience with conflict resolution and creative alternative problem‑solving techniques.
