Police Officer I (S) Agency & Division North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Division of State Operated Healthcare Facilities – Longleaf Neuro‑Medical Treatment Center. Job Classification Grade: SW04. Recruitment Range: $45,506 to $72,811. Responsibilities This is law enforcement work performed at North Carolina state building and grounds. Employees investigate and enforce a variety of criminal and traffic cases, including crimes against persons and property and motor vehicle violations. Work involves enforcing state laws and regulations within jurisdictional boundaries and responding to calls for assistance in the state government complex. Investigate criminal offenses involving state property, state employees, or visitors to state property. Interview persons to obtain information pertaining to crime scenes. Check buildings during non‑working hours and at night to ensure security of property and equipment. Complete investigative reports pertaining to criminal acts reported in or around state buildings and property, and interview victims and witnesses. Arrest suspects in connection with crimes or violations of law. Testify in court as needed. Recruitment Note Applicants hired prior to completion of Basic Law Enforcement Training and NC Probationary Law Enforcement Certification will be limited to recruit assignments until the training and certification are both complete. These recruits will perform tasks such as shadowing certified police officers, studying policies and procedures, and performing administrative tasks. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Working knowledge of standard law enforcement equipment, its care and safe use according to Departmental Policy. Working knowledge of the laws relating to the rights of suspects, search, and seizure, maintaining the chain of evidence and arrest authority. Ability to act quickly and intelligently in emergency situations. Ability to communicate effectively through interpersonal interactions and written documentation. Ability to apply North Carolina laws to investigations. Minimum Education and Experience High‑school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma. Must complete NC Probationary Law Enforcement Certification, including completion of Basic Law Enforcement Training, within one year of employment. Must be at least 20 years of age. Must possess a valid NC driver’s license. Veteran and National Guard Preference Veteran preference requires attachment of a DD‑214 Member‑4 Form or equivalent. National Guard preference requires attachment of an NGB 23A (RPAS) and state application if a current member of the NC National Guard. Former members of the NC Army National Guard or NC Air National Guard with honorable discharge and six years of creditable service must attach a copy of the DD 256 or NGB 22 and state application.
