Position Summary:
The Certified Substance Abuse Counseling Assistant (CSAC-A) provides substance use disorder treatment support services under appropriate supervision or direction in accordance with Virginia Board of Counseling requirements, DBHDS regulations, DMAS requirements, agency policies, and the individual's treatment/service plan. The CSAC-A supports individuals in developing and maintaining recovery skills while working as part of the interdisciplinary treatment team.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Orient individuals to the substance use disorder treatment program, including program expectations, schedules, rules, services, rights, and responsibilities.
2. Assist with implementation of individualized substance use treatment and recovery plans as directed by appropriately credentialed clinical staff.
3. Provide case-management activities, including coordination with community resources and other service providers.
4. Assist individuals with accessing housing, transportation, medical care, benefits, employment resources, recovery supports, and other community services when included in the individual's treatment plan.
5. Participate in recovery-oriented group discussions within the CSAC-A's permitted scope of practice.
6. Reinforce recovery concepts, coping strategies, relapse-prevention skills, healthy routines, and treatment recommendations established by qualified treatment professionals.
7. Observe and document individuals' participation, behaviors, progress, needs, and response to treatment interventions.
8. Complete progress notes, case-management documentation, service coordination records, and other required documentation accurately and timely.
9. Assist with substance-use or dependence crisis intervention under appropriate supervision or direction.
10. Communicate significant changes in an individual's condition, behavior, relapse risk, safety, or treatment participation to the appropriate supervisor or clinical professional.
11. Participate in treatment-team meetings, case consultations, staff meetings, and required supervision.
12. Assist with referrals, linkage to community services, discharge planning, and continuity-of-care activities as assigned and permitted by credential.
13. Maintain confidentiality and comply with applicable HIPAA, 42 CFR Part 2, DBHDS, DMAS, and agency requirements.
14. Maintain current CSAC-A certification and complete required training and continuing education.
15. Perform other duties consistent with the employee's CSAC-A credential, demonstrated competency, agency policy, and Virginia law.
