Job Summary This position plans and implements an instructional program and provides related educational services for students. It manages student behavior, assesses and evaluates student achievement, and modifies instructional activities as required. The teacher serves as a general education classroom teacher, with classes that may be single or multi‑grade level, subject‑, skill‑, or specialty‑oriented. Duties are usually performed within a team or departmental setting but may also be conducted independently in a specialized teaching role. The position may be assigned to science labs or technology labs that require higher monitoring to reduce accidental injury risk. The role reports to a principal and/or other designated administrator. Essential Responsibilities – Specific to This Job Assess continually student achievement and maintain appropriate assessment and evaluation documentation for institutional and individual reporting purposes. Plan and implement appropriate instructional and/or learning strategies and activities, including appropriate allocation of learning time, and utilization of a variety of instructional materials and multi‑media and computer technology to enhance learning. Manage the behavior of learners in an instructional setting to ensure an environment conducive to learning and assist with behavior management in other parts of the school. Coordinate instructional activities with other professional staff, both within and outside the school, to maximize learning opportunities. Work in a self‑contained, team, departmental, itinerant capacity or may make off‑school site visits to monitor students, confer with employers or serve as a field instructor. Participate in in‑service and professional development activities and staff meetings as required. Foster partnerships and maintain continuous communication with parents, both written and oral, to inform them of student progress. Communicate continually with students about instructional expectations to keep them informed of progress. Assign work to and supervise instructional assistants, parent and student volunteers. Serve at two or more schools on a regular basis as itinerant. Support or participate in school‑wide student activities and social events. Monitor student behavior in non‑instructional areas and intervene to control or modify disruptive behavior, reporting to appropriate administrators as needed. Collaborate with other professionals (guidance counselors, librarians, etc.) to carry out school‑wide instructional or related activities as needed. Communicate effectively. Relate to and interact with a non‑traditional and diverse student and employee population. Report to work on a regular and punctual basis as scheduled. Perform all other related work delegated or required to accomplish the objectives of the total school program. Have knowledge of and be able to use relevant technology. Participate in the annual professional growth planning process. Recognize that one is in a position of public trust and is held to a high standard of personal and professional conduct. Qualifications — Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Behaviors Knowledge of the instructional process. Knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment of the instructional specialty to which assigned. Knowledge of pre‑adolescent and adolescent growth and development. Knowledge of Prince William County curriculum related to assignments and School Division mission, goals, and organization. Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs. Skill in the use of multi‑media and computer technology to enhance learning. Ability to plan and implement lessons based on Division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Skill in oral and written communication; excellent human relations skills. If teaching a foreign language, proficiency in oral and written communications in that language. If teaching choral music, ability to teach through demonstrating singing/choral techniques, proficiency on the piano; ability to distinguish pitches and tone quality. If teaching instrumental music classes, proficiency in one or more musical instruments, and the ability to model correct playing techniques in all instruments; ability to distinguish pitches and tone quality. If teaching visual art, a personal portfolio demonstrating artistic ability and experience in a variety of media. If teaching in career and technical education, journey‑level proficiency in that trade is required with on‑the‑job journey, lead, or supervisory experience desirable. Education and Certification Requirements Minimum: Bachelor’s Degree. Certification: State‑issued colleague or post‑graduate professional teaching license endorsed for the assigned subject. Other: Possession of a valid automobile operator’s license to operate a vehicle in Virginia is required if the teacher performs off‑site or itinerant work. Work Environment Work is performed in a standard indoor environment such as classroom, office, or lab. Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
