Editorial Director
$105k - $120kNon-Profit Association
The International News Media Association (INMA) is the global association for the news media industry — broadcasters, newspapers, magazines, and digital natives on six continents — and its editorial output is the connective tissue of the membership: daily blogs, eight-plus strategic reports a year, newsletters, and the Web site through which members experience all of it. We are looking for an Editorial Director to own that output end to end: its volume, its quality, its regularity, and its intellectual standing.
This is a senior role. You will own the content calendar. You will be generating a pipeline of content from a membership of thousands of practitioners who have things to say and rarely get asked. You will embrace AI and understand its intricacies – what to double down on, what to avoid. You are part editor, part content recruiter, part product owner.
INMA is small (15+ FTEs plus contractors) but mighty. While the editorial team is small, we occasionally feel like a newsroom on deadline. Speed and accuracy are crucial.
What you will own
Blog volume and the member pipeline. INMA currently publishes around three blog posts a day. The target is five or more, and the growth comes chiefly from members at media companies rather than paid contractors. That means building and working a bench of member contributors — spotting the executive who gave a strong conference talk, the practitioner who posted something sharp on LinkedIn, the case study buried in a report — and turning them into regular voices. Recruiting, briefing, chasing, editing and encouraging is the daily work of this role. We want every corporate member per year to be a contributor.
The editing process. Every piece that carries the INMA name reads cleanly, argues clearly and is factually sound. You set and run the editorial standard for a stable of contract writers and Initiative Leads, from commissioning through publication, including headlines, imagery, and presentation on the site.
Style and standards. You know the Associated Press Stylebook cold — not as a reference you consult but as a reflex — and you understand that INMA bends it. Our house style is AP at its spine with an international, typically British, overlay: spellings, dates, currencies, titles, place names and the vocabulary of a global industry rather than an American one (you love the Oxford comma and Economist-like style). You will be the guardian of that style, the person who codifies it where it is currently tribal knowledge, and the one who applies it consistently across contract writers, member contributors and Initiative Leads who each arrive with their own habits. Consistency across at least five posts a day, eight reports a year and every newsletter is the job, and the reader should never be able to tell which of a dozen hands touched a piece.
Strategic reports. Eight or more a year, delivered on a published schedule rather than when they happen to be finished. You will manage the calendar with the Initiative Leads and outside authors, edit substantively as well as for style, and see each report through design and launch, including how it is promoted to members.
Products. The Daily Member Update, the weekly newsletters, initiative newsletters, The Distillation, and the editorial architecture of INMA.org are yours. Ownership means their format, their voice, their metrics and their evolution — not only filling the slots.
Working with AI. INMA uses AI as an editorial instrument, not a replacement for editorial judgment. We produce complex distillations — of conferences, study tours, master classes and hundreds of hours of transcripts — that would be impossible at human speed alone, and we expect this to grow. You will direct that work: framing the questions, shaping the outputs, checking them against what was actually said and done, and applying the same editorial standard to a machine-assisted synthesis as to a human-written blog. At the same time, the core of INMA’s editorial remains human-contributed — members and Initiative Leads writing from experience — and part of your job is to keep the line between the two clear to readers and to yourself. You should arrive already fluent in these tools and curious about what they will do next; you should also arrive with a sceptic’s eye for where they fail.
Intellectual partnership. INMA’s Initiative Leads are among the most respected thinkers in their fields. You need to be a peer to them: able to challenge a thesis, sharpen an argument, spot the story inside a data set, and bring your own view of where the industry is heading. This is the difference between an editor and an Editorial Director.
Who you are
You have led an editorial operation — a newsroom desk, a trade publication, a B2B content function, or a think-tank’s publishing arm — and have the scars to show for hitting daily deadlines and long-form ones at the same time. You know the news media business from the inside: subscriptions, advertising, product, newsroom transformation, the platform relationships, and the AI transition. You edit with a light hand and a sharp eye, and you can make an executive who “doesn’t write” produce 800 good words.
You have a thorough knowledge of the international news media markets. This isn't designed for ramp-up ... we are seeking someone who can come in a tell us more about the global media market than we know.
You are fluent in AP style and equally at home in British and international usage — the rare editor who can move between the two without hesitation. That profile is most often found at an international wire service, a global trade title, or a U.S. organisation writing for a worldwide audience, and candidates should expect an editing test that checks for both sides of it.
You are an active, hands-on user of AI in editorial work — prompting, evaluating and editing machine-assisted synthesis — and you can articulate where it belongs in a publishing workflow and where it does not.
You are organised enough to run a 12-month reports calendar and relaxed enough to run it across a dozen time zones. You are comfortable in a small, distributed team where you will do the work as well as direct it.
Nice to have: experience with e-mail platforms and CMS administration, familiarity with analytics tooling, and a second language.
How the role works
Remote, reporting to the Executive Director and CEO, working daily with Initiative Leads and the marketing and production team. Occasional travel to INMA events. This is a full-time position with a pay range of US$105K to US$120K per year plus health/life and 401(k).
Measures of success in year one
Blog output sustained at five-plus posts a day with a growing share from members; every scheduled report published in its scheduled month; a codified INMA style guide in use by every contributor; measurable improvement in newsletter engagement; and Initiative Leads who describe you as making their work better.
