Job Overview
This position requires a solid understanding of respiratory care, enabling the provision of services to diverse patient groups while considering their chronological, social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development. The respiratory care provided is based on physician orders and adheres to established standards and protocols.
Key Responsibilities- Assist in achieving departmental goals and objectives while following policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety regulations. Ensure compliance with governmental and accreditation requirements.
- Evaluate the physical, psychosocial, spiritual, and cultural aspects of patients, along with their educational needs, and document findings appropriately.
- Administer a variety of respiratory therapy treatments and services, which include but are not limited to: operating and managing equipment, providing oxygen, mixed gases, and humidity; monitoring ventilators (both invasive and non-invasive); conducting bronchial hygiene, lung expansion, spirometry testing, EKGs, and blood gas analysis.
- Utilize therapeutic communication techniques, problem-solving skills, and crisis intervention strategies during patient care.
- Review electronic medical records and physician orders regularly throughout the shift.
- Engage in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) by maintaining airways and providing oxygen and ventilation through masks, endotracheal tubes, or other devices, as well as performing closed chest cardiac massage.
- Enhance workflow efficiency by monitoring interdepartmental systems and processes, adhering to departmental policies, and suggesting improvements as necessary.
- Carry out additional duties relevant to the role and area of responsibility. The listed responsibilities provide a general overview of the work associated with this classification and are not exhaustive.
- Adhere to all organizational policies and standards.
- Utilize organizational resources in an effective and efficient manner.
- Refer to competency validation documents for the specific populations served when applicable.
- Associate’s degree from an AMA accredited respiratory care program, with an AAS Degree or higher required.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related healthcare field is preferred.
- Less than one year of experience in acute care is required. Registry eligibility is necessary.
- Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) - Must hold and maintain a license to practice respiratory care in Maryland and/or the District of Columbia, depending on the hospital location.
- Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) - Certification from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) is required.
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) - Certification from the NBRC is preferred.
- Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification (including BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross is required within 90 days.
- Additional unit or specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is required within one year, where applicable.
- Comprehensive understanding of human respiratory anatomy, physiology, and pathology as they relate to respiratory care.
- Familiarity with the operation of respiratory care equipment and its clinical applications.
- Ability to identify hazardous conditions related to respiratory care and take appropriate corrective actions.
- Capability to work with patients across all age groups, from neonates to geriatrics.
- Ability to maintain composure and perform effectively under pressure.
- Strong teamwork skills and the ability to communicate clearly with diverse individuals.
The salary range for this position is USD $35.68 - USD $64.71 per hour.
