What a day looks like

You start at 7:00 AM reviewing the day’s priorities with production. A new aerospace prototype arrives in your queue—complex surfaces and tight GD&T. You open Virtual Gibbs (or your preferred CAM suite), analyze the 3D model, and craft efficient 3-, 4-, and 5-axis toolpaths. You simulate, post for the target controller (Fanuc, Haas, Mazak, or Okuma), and walk to the floor to partner with the machinist on setup. By mid-morning, first article begins; you collaborate with Quality to validate features and tighten programs. The afternoon is dedicated to program standardization, documenting fixtures and setup sheets, and improving an existing family of parts to cut cycle time while extending tool life. Before you wrap, you update the revision-controlled program library and note opportunities for future process gains.

Role overview

As a CNC Programming specialist, you will develop, optimize, and maintain CNC programs for mills and lathes—spanning 3-, 4-, and 5-axis platforms—to support precision sheet metal and machined components. You’ll ensure repeatable quality aligned to customer specs and AS9100 requirements while partnering closely with engineering, machining, and quality teams on both prototype and production work.

Key responsibilities

• Generate, edit, and refine CAM toolpaths for multi-axis milling and turning; verify via simulation and post to specific controllers.
• Interpret blueprints, 3D CAD, and GD select strategies, feeds/speeds, and cutting parameters that balance cycle time, surface finish, and tool life.
• Define tooling, fixturing, and workholding approaches for complex materials and geometries; create clear setup sheets and work instructions.
• Support first article inspections; adjust programs to meet print; collaborate with Quality on discrepancies and corrective actions.
• Continuously improve existing programs for safety, consistency, and efficiency; standardize multi‑axis programming methods.
• Maintain a revision‑controlled CNC program library; ensure traceability and audit readiness per AS9100.
• Partner with supervisors, machinists, and engineers to sequence work; assist with quotations and cycle time estimates.
• Coach and support operators and machinists on best practices and program intent.

Qualifications Education & experience

• High school diploma or GED required; technical certificate or associate degree in machining, manufacturing, or engineering preferred.
• 3+ years of CNC programming for mills and/or lathes in a precision manufacturing setting.
• Strongly preferred: experience with aerospace/defense work and AS9100 systems.
• Hands‑on background with 4‑ and 5‑axis machining centers.

Skills & competencies

• Proficiency in CAM (GibbsCAM/Virtual Gibbs or comparable) and 3D model interpretation.
• Deep knowledge of machining processes, tooling, and materials.
• Fluency in G‑code/M‑code and common controllers (Fanuc, Haas, Mazak, Okuma).
• Advanced print reading, GD&T, and documentation discipline.
• Problem‑solving mindset with a track record of program optimization.

Physical requirements & work environment

• Work spans office and manufacturing floor with exposure to machinery, noise, sharp edges, and metal components.
• Standing and walking required; ability to lift up to 30 lbs during part validation support.
• Follow all safety procedures at all times, including proper use of PPE.

Schedule & compensation

Hours: 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM, Monday–Friday (flexing as needed to meet demand)

Pay: $24–$38 per hour
