Under the general supervision of the Medical Director, provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders including polysomnography, diagnostic and therapeutic services, patient care and education. Responsibilities Gathers and analyzes patient information and prepares for patient testing by collecting, analyzing and integrating patient information to identify and meet the patient\'s needs (physical/mental limitations, current emotional/physiological status regarding the testing procedure, pertinent medical/social history). Uses patient information to determine final testing parameters/procedures in conjunction with the ordering physician and/or medical director and laboratory protocols. Completes and verifies documentation and explains pre-testing, testing and post-testing procedures to the patient. Prepares and calibrates equipment required for testing to determine proper functioning and makes adjustments as necessary; applies electrodes and sensors according to published standards; performs physiologic calibrations to ensure proper signals and make adjustments as needed. Performs PAP mask fitting; evaluates sleep study-related equipment for proper function; performs routine and complex equipment care and maintenance; maintains an adequate inventory of supplies. Responds to study participant\'s procedural inquiries with appropriate information. Performs polysomnographic, diagnostic and therapeutic services in accordance with department policies, following procedural protocols (e.g., multiple sleep latency tests, maintenance of wakefulness tests, parasomnia studies, PAP, oxygen titration, Home Tests) to ensure data quality. Follows \'lights out\' procedures to establish baseline values; performs data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality and making adjustments for artifact-free signals. Documents routine observations including sleep stages and clinical events to support scoring and interpretation; implements patient safety interventions (continuous/bi-level PAP, oxygen, etc.). Follows \'lights on\' procedures to verify data integrity and completes data collection; instructs patients on questionnaires and repeats calibrations as needed. Provides age-specific care across neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients; oversees and performs difficult procedures and interventions as required. Complies with applicable laws, regulations, guidelines and standards regarding safety and infection control. Performs other duties to maintain personal competence and contribute to department effectiveness; completes other job-related duties and projects as assigned. Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department-specific education within established timeframes. Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year. Direct patient care providers maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department. Uses universal precautions, protective equipment and ergonomic techniques to protect patients and self; complies with regulatory agency requirements and department policies. Education And Experience Typically requires an associate degree in polysomnography or a polysomnography program of at least one year at a state-licensed and/or nationally accredited facility, or equivalent experience with proficiency in all competencies required of a Sleep Technician. Must be certified (or eligible) as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) or Registered Sleep Technologist (RST), Sleep Disorders Specialty (SDS). Candidates with a Respiratory Therapy background, a valid Michigan license, and registry/registry-eligibility as a Respiratory Therapist will be considered. Knowledge & Skills Knowledge of polysomnography techniques and procedures; maintains current BLS for Healthcare Providers and professional certifications. Strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) for effective interaction with patients, families, technicians and aides. Analytical skills to determine appropriate therapy methods based on patient observation and diagnostic reports, and to apply policies and procedures. Working Conditions Works in a patient care environment with potential exposure to chemicals, vapors and blood-borne pathogens. Physical Demands Requires physical ability and stamina to walk/stand for prolonged periods; push carts/wheelchairs up to 50 pounds; position/lift patients up to 35 pounds unassisted (over 35 pounds with assistance); provide CPR as needed.
