The Custodian is essential to maintaining a clean, safe, and dignified environment for guests, staff, and volunteers. This role performs a wide range of critical tasks, including scheduled cleanings, sanitizing common areas, stocking supplies, managing linen services, processing donations, and preparing vacant units. The position requires a proactive approach to maintenance response, participation in emergency preparedness, and the timely reporting of all facility issues.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

1. Follow daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning schedules for all assigned areas. 
2. Clean and sanitize bathrooms, showers, toilets, and sinks; keep them fully stocked with supplies. 
3. Mop, sweep, and vacuum all types of floors. 
4. Collect, dispose of, and manage garbage and biohazard waste. 
5. Wash interior and exterior windows and walls. 
6. Restock supplies like paper towels, toilet paper, and soap in all dispensers. 
7. Change light bulbs and perform other minor tasks as needed. 
8. Report problems to your supervisor, including: 
   1. Maintenance needs (water leaks, equipment repair). 
   2. Safety hazards (vandalism, damage, pests). 
   3. The need for more cleaning supplies. 
9. Prepare vacant rooms/units by cleaning and stocking them with essential items. 
10. Engage with guests, staff, and visitors in a professional, respectful, and trauma-informed manner. 
11. Coordinate the daily washing of all facility linens to ensure guests have clean bedding. 
12. Assist with collecting, sorting, and managing donations in the warehouse. 
13. Conduct continuous rounds of restroom and common areas to ensure safety and respond to issues. 
14. Perform deep floor care, including stripping, waxing, and buffing. 
15. Assist with pest control efforts and basic repairs of facility equipment. 
16. Monitor and report inappropriate or unsafe behavior to security staff and seek support from other staff, as needed. 
17. Assist with minor landscaping and exterior maintenance tasks. 
18. Support facility projects at other agency locations as needed. 
19. Attend mandatory agency trainings, including Trauma-Informed Care, Housing Focused, De-escalation, Suicide Prevention, CPR, and more.  
20. Participate in emergency drills and environmental safety activities, as required. 
21. Follow all agency protocols for security, safety, and sanitation to maintain a clean and secure environment for guests and staff. 
22. Maintain regular and reliable attendance as an essential function of this position.

Education and Experience 

• Experience working with diverse and/or vulnerable populations is preferred.  
• High school diploma or GED preferred. 
• Previous housekeeping, custodial, or service industry experience preferred.

8. Ability to handle minor complaints, suggestions, and feedback from staff and guests in a calm, professional, and respectful manner. 
9. Ability to remain focused on the job while dealing with frequent interruptions from guests and/or other staff. 
10. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse populations. 
11. Provide thoughtful and attentive customer service by communicating clearly and handling difficult situations with professionalism, patience, and empathy. 
12. Use basic computer programs (email, spreadsheets, and more) and have basic computer skills. 
13. Ability to accept supervision, direction, and feedback with openness. 
14. Communicate clearly and effectively with clients, coworkers, and supervisors using verbal and written communication. 

Physical and Equipment Requirements 

• Ability to lift and move heavy items up to 50 pounds.  
• Ability to sit, stand, and move for at least an hour at a time or more.  
• Ability to bend, squat, kneel, twist, push, and pull to perform job functions. 
• Ability to use stairs or steps. 
• Ability to safely climb stairs, ladders, and step stools. 
• Ability to operate equipment and machinery, as needed. 
• Wear OSHA-required protective gear for safety.
