Deputy Title IX Coordinator - Education and Training

Brigham Young University is seeking a Deputy Title IX Coordinator to work closely with and under the direction of the Title IX Coordinator. This position plays a critical role in supporting a safe, respectful, and educational campus environment through training and prevention, alternative resolutions, and Title IX investigations .

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in higher education, student affairs, student conduct, counseling, or Title IX , excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work thoughtfully and impartially with highly sensitive and confidential matters.

What you will be doing in this position

Training and Prevention

  • The Deputy Title IX Coordinator will take a lead role in researching, developing, implementing, and delivering Title IX education and prevention programs for the campus community. This includes developing and delivering training for new and continuing students, faculty, and staff, both online and in person.
  • The position will create ongoing prevention and awareness campaigns focused on risk reduction, positive bystander intervention, and awareness of sexual violence. The Deputy Title IX Coordinator will also manage a calendar of education and prevention events, marketing campaigns, and related initiatives.
  • Develop a comprehensive infrastructure for training and educational programming related to sexual assault prevention, dating violence, domestic violence, stalking, and related issues.
  • Under the direction of the Title IX Coordinator, provide leadership for Title IX education and outreach efforts.
  • Train students and other campus constituents regarding their rights and responsibilities under Title IX.

Alternative Resolutions and Investigations

  • The Deputy Title IX Coordinator will facilitate alternative resolutions in appropriate Title IX matters and serve as an impartial facilitator throughout the process. Alternative resolution approaches may include mediation, shuttle negotiation, restorative practices, facilitated dialogue, educational conversations, and other appropriate resolution methods.
  • The Deputy Title IX Coordinator also investigate reports of alleged sexual harassment and may also serve as a decision-maker for Title IX Investigations.

Receive Training and Education on Title IX Issues

  • The Deputy Title IX Coordinator will remain current on Title IX issues, regulations, trends, and best practices through ongoing professional development. This includes participating in webinars, workshops, conference calls, broadcasts, regional and national conferences, and other training opportunities.
  • The Deputy Title IX Coordinator also serves on campus committees as assigned by the Title IX Coordinator.

Major Accountabilities

Training and Prevention

  • Research, develop, implement, and deliver training to the entire campus community.

  • Remain knowledgeable of current state and federal laws and regulations and trends in higher education related to sexual violence, including Title IX and VAWA.

  • Research and review commercially available training programs to inform BYU's approach to training.

  • Develop and disseminate educational materials, including brochures, posters, and web-based resources, that inform students, faculty, administrators, staff, and parents about Title IX rights, responsibilities, and available resources.

  • Ensure training programs and services meet or exceed standards and guidelines established through university policy and comply with Title IX, the Clery Act, and other applicable state and federal laws.

  • Develop a comprehensive infrastructure for training and educational programming related to sexual assault prevention, dating violence, domestic violence, stalking, and related issues.

  • Under the direction of the Title IX Coordinator, provide leadership for Title IX education and outreach efforts.

  • Train students and other campus constituents regarding their rights and responsibilities under Title IX.

  • Ensure students are aware of their options and resources for reporting and filing complaints related to sexual harassment, sexual assault, sexual misconduct, and relationship violence.

  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with campus and community partners to connect students and employees with counseling, health, mental health, victim support, legal assistance, and other available services.

  • Update the training portion of the Title IX website as appropriate.

  • Maintain a confidential log of training activities.

Alternative Resolutions

  • Educate parties and their advisors about options available under the Sexual Harassment Grievance Procedures.

  • Conduct alternative resolution proceedings, including supportive measures, educational conversations, mediation, shuttle negotiation, restorative practices, and facilitated dialogue.

Investigations

  • Develop an individualized investigation plan for each complaint.

  • Manage the day-to-day responsibilities associated with Title IX investigations.

  • Interview complainants, respondents, and potential witnesses.

  • Gather and secure evidentiary materials.

  • Serve as a decision-maker for Title IX investigations, determining whether parties are responsible for policy violations and determining appropriate sanctions.

  • Participate in hearing panels and appeals of Title IX investigation decisions as required.

Receive Training and Education on Title IX Issues

  • Participate in regular training and education related to Title IX issues.

  • Participate in webinars, workshops, conference calls, broadcasts, and other professional development opportunities.

  • Attend regional and national conferences and training sessions to remain current on Title IX trends, issues, regulations, and best practices.

What qualifies you for this role

Required Education and Experience

  • Master's degree in Counseling, higher education or a related field.

  • At least two years of professional experience in higher education, student affairs, student conduct, Title IX, counseling, or a related field.

  • Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • At least four years of professional experience in a higher education setting , particularly in student affairs, student conduct, student judicial affairs, Title IX, or a related area.

  • Experience working with students in an educational, developmental, or conduct-related setting.

  • Experience with Title IX investigations, alternative resolution processes, or prevention and education programming.

Skills, Abilities, and Knowledge

  • Deep commitment to the founding principles of BYU and to a non-adversarial, educational, and learning-based student conduct philosophy.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including experience conducting investigative interviews that are fair, prompt, impartial, and equitable.

  • Ability to present data and other information effectively.

  • Creative problem-solving skills and the ability to carefully follow and comply with university policies.

  • Superior judgment and the ability to manage highly sensitive information and confidential communications.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to remain neutral and impartial when required.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare complex, detailed, and technical investigative reports.

  • Understanding of legal terminology and the ability to synthesize applicable laws and regulations pertinent to Title IX issues.

  • Demonstrated commitment to serving diverse student populations with sensitivity.

  • Ability to identify and integrate best practices in Title IX investigations and education and to analyze and implement forthcoming guidance from the U.S. Department of Education, OCR, BYU's Office of General Counsel, and the Title IX Coordinator.

  • Clear understanding of the differences between the nature, scope, and purpose of Honor Code investigations and Title IX investigations.

  • Ability to work independently and effectively as part of a team.

  • Ability to work effectively with complex and confidential information under pressure.

  • Ability to interact effectively with students, faculty, parents, community members, and campus departments while managing multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with computer databases, spreadsheets, software packages, Microsoft Office, and Title IX tracking systems.

This is a critical position within the BYU Title IX Office. The Deputy Title IX Coordinator works with highly sensitive Title IX matters and plays an important role in ensuring that investigations, alternative resolution processes, and prevention and education efforts are conducted thoughtfully, professionally, and in accordance with university policies and applicable regulations.

The position works with a broad range of members of the campus community, as well as law enforcement, outside agencies, and university departments. The role requires professionalism, sound judgment, discretion, compassion, and the ability to work effectively with individuals who may be experiencing difficult or highly emotional circumstances.

Pay Grade: 54

Typical Starting Pay: $82,000-$106,500

The actual compensation offered will take into consideration internal equity and may vary based on the candidate’s job-related experience, knowledge, skills, and other relevant factors. Candidates with very significant work-related experience may receive an offer higher than the posted typical range.
