Position Overview

Pantheon Data is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Staff Writer to join our dynamic communications team. The ideal candidate will have advanced experience in writing and editing diverse communication materials, conducting interviews, and supporting various media and public relations efforts.

The Staff Writer supports the Navy by providing authoritative guidance on editorial matters to personnel.

This project supports the Command mission of designing, building, delivering and sustaining the U.S. Navy's ships, submarines and systems through its strategic communications efforts. Representing more than 86,000 employees geographically dispersed across more than 40 locations worldwide and is responsible for providing the strategic guidance, planning and execution support for all enterprise-wide internal and external communication, including marketing requirements and legislative engagement. In this capacity, the office provides direct support and strategic advisement to the Commander on all communication matters.

Responsibilities

• Provide executive level writing and editorial support for correspondence intended for Members of Congress, Department of Defense (DOD), Chief of Naval Operations, and Navy Leadership.
• Prepare statements, press releases, long-form articles, public affairs guidance, communication plans, briefing cards in plain language.
• Develop responses to media queries, coordinating with applicable subject matter experts.
• Attend external events (e.g. think tanks, congressional hearings, symposium) and synopsize discussions to provide overall awareness of current discussions, trends and talking points, whitepapers, and briefs.
• Develop integrated planning calendars and engagement plans that align to the strategic objectives of programs and priorities.
• Prepare long-form articles and related communication products for enterprise-wide dissemination, coordinating with all applicable stakeholders.
• Execute media training and develop prep packages for Navy leaders and support media engagements (e.g. interviews, media roundtables, gaggles, etc.) with local, national and defense trade press across various communication channels (e.g. radio, print, broadcast, etc.).
• Conduct media monitoring and analysis across communication channels.
• Create communication strategies and materials that promote engagement with internal and external stakeholders.
• Consult with staff to ensure information is presented accurately.
• Maintain awareness of current government writing and reporting style and format requirements.
• Identify needs and evolving requirements in a fast-paced environment to develop recommendations and solutions grounded in data-driven analytics and critical evaluation.
• Manage multiple small- and large-scale projects that contribute to a larger strategic communications plan.

Required Skills and Experience

• Ten (10) years' related experience in communications with focus on defense acquisition or other federal appropriation / authorization matters
• Experience with Congress, the Navy and Department of Defense.
• Clear understanding and application of Navy and Associated Press Style guidance in all writing and editing oversight.
• Experience in research, conducting interviews, writing, editing, and obtaining release/approval for articles, feature stories, news releases, and statements, including electronic, web based, and hard copy material.
• Ability to work effectively remotely in cross-functional teams.
• Ability to meet deadlines and produce quality work.
• Proficient in Microsoft Suite software including Outlook, Word, Excel, SharePoint, and PowerPoint.

Education

Bachelor's degree in English or Communications field.

Clearance Requirements

Applicants selected will be subject to a security investigation and may need to meet eligibility requirements. Secret Clearance is required for continued employment.

Work Location: Washington Navy Yard; Onsite 5 days per week

Compensation

The salary range for this position is $100,000 - $127,000. This is not, however, a guarantee of compensation or salary. Rather, salary will be set based on experience, geographic location and possibly contractual requirements and could fall outside of this range.
