HVAC Mechanic II

Hours Per Day: 10 Months of Employment: Lasting through 11/13/2026. Position Type: Interim Level of Benefits: None Pay Range: $22.11 - $28.07 based on state service Minimum Degree Level: High school or equivalent Additional Position Comments: Constructs, modifies, and repairs heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment, environmental control systems, as well as refrigerated and gas-powered kitchen equipment, ensuring all systems operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable codes and standards.

Job Summary: Constructs, modifies or repairs heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment and environmental control systems. Performs work, including but not limited to monitoring operation of energy management systems in Buncombe County Public Schools; repairing and maintaining HVACR systems and equipment; conducting new energy management system installation; and providing energy management system computers with new and/or updated program versions.

Qualifications

• High school diploma
• Technical school training for HVAC equipment
• Two to three years previous experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of ventilation, air conditioning and environmental control systems
• EPA Certification
• Extensive experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of HVAC and related environmental control systems
• North Carolina H1, H2, H3 HVAC license preferred

Performance Responsibilities

• Monitors operation of energy management systems in Buncombe County Public Schools. Assess performance of individual energy management systems; identifies system operation conditions; performs computer tests of energy management system to locate failures; and sets up system schedules for normal and special system operation.
• Repair and maintain HVACR systems and equipment. Conducts computer tests of the energy management system; identifies the malfunctioning equipment; assists HVACR mechanics in troubleshooting and fault diagnoses; makes repairs to energy management system computer and/or HVACR equipment hardware; and performs system tests to ensure system operability.
• Conducts new energy management system installation. Coordinates new/replacement projects with contractor(s) and inspectors; installs new energy management system; coordinates service hook-ups with energy management system; and performs system tests to ensure system operability.
• Provides energy management system computers with new and/or updated program versions. Prepares new computer programs and/or updates existing programs to continually optimize HVACR performance.
• Multi-task and prioritize effectively, flexibly and responsively while possessing the ability to collaborate with diverse work styles using a high level of Emotional Intelligence and Professionalism
• Performs other duties/special assignments as required or to meet the ongoing needs of the department

• Knowledge of the design and operation of pneumatic control systems

Equipment

• Equipment used includes hammers, wrenches, metal snips, electric drills, pipe cutters and benders, measurement gauges, acetylene torches, voltmeters, thermometers, pressure gauges, manometers, computers and other testing devices

• Work involves reviewing the heating and cooling requirements and makes recommendations to achieve optimum system effectiveness and efficiency

• Requires the ability to communicate effectively using speech, color vision and hearing.

Special Requirements

• Valid North Carolina's driver's license
• Will be driving company vehicle - must have good driving record
• Maintain clean and neat vehicle
• Report maintenance needed and schedule repairs
