Position Summary

The Director of Dental Services is responsible for management, administration and supervision of all Dental services of the health center. The Dental Director provides direct high quality patient care in their respective specialty to patients and collaborates effectively with other providers and staff to provide effective team based medical care. The Director of Dental Services is also responsible for representing the health center in the community and developing dental health education programs, under the direction of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide administrative and management direction for dental services anywhere dental care is provided: on-site offices, school based offices, mobile units
• Ensure all federal and state health regulations are adhered to
• Develop and enforce protocols and workflows for the department in all sites including school based and the mobile units
• Serve as the direct supervisor for all dentists, hygienists, and dental assistants
• Conduct performance reviews, recommends promotions and disciplinary actions
• Ensure all new hires are trained in dental procedures, protocols and recording in the electronic medical record
• Provide dental services to individual patients of all age groups and properly documents diagnoses and treatment of dental patient visits in the medical record
• Participate in the development of, and adherence to clinical protocols, quality assessment and quality improvement procedures and practices
• Develop protocols to maximize reimbursement opportunities from third-party payers, including commercial insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid.
• Meet with the CMO at least monthly and provide regular progress reports and departmental updates
• Conduct regular department meetings
• Participate in leadership team developmental trainings and staff meetings
• At the request of the CEO/CMO, assist in the preparation of grant proposals and helps manage grants as necessary
• Perform all the essential duties of a staff dentist
• Perform other related duties as assigned by management

Supervisory Duties and Responsibilities

• Directly supervises 17-20 employees within the Dental Services department.

• Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

• Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems .  
• Supervises students during their rotation through the dental clinic.
• Supervises School-Based Health Center Dental services. 

Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited school of dentistry
• Maintains the appropriate licenses to practice dentistry in the State of South Carolina.
• Minimum of three years of practice as a general dentist with practice in an FQHC setting preferred
• At least three years’ experience in a clinical, academic or administrative leadership position, preferred.
• Strong oral and written communication skills; analytical and problem solving and personal computer skills including proficiency in use of word processing and spreadsheet software.
• Possesses a valid South Carolina driver’s license and clean driving record
• Maintain current CPR certification
