CUSTODIAN Mooresville Graded School District, Mooresville Middle School – Mooresville, North Carolina Application Deadline: Posted until filled Posted: Jun 15, 2026 4:00 AM (UTC) Starting Date: Immediately Job Description GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB Under general supervision, performs a variety of general custodial and light groundskeeping work in the care and maintenance of assigned school buildings and facilities. Duties include sweeping, mopping, vacuuming floors, washing walls, woodwork, and fixtures, and clearing trash and debris. Employee is also responsible for requisitioning cleaning supplies. Reports to the Principal. Specific Duties and Responsibilities Sweeps, mops, vacuums, strips, waxes, and buffs floor surfaces. Cleans restroom areas and replenishes paper supplies and soap as necessary. Cleans windows, walls, woodwork, blinds, and light fixtures. Dusts and cleans desks and other furniture. Empties trash receptacles and deposits recyclable material in proper receptacles. Sweeps sidewalks and walkways outside of buildings; polices grounds, picks up debris; shovels snow and or applies de‑icing compounds to walkways and driveways, as necessary. Replaces burned‑out light bulbs. Prepares requisition forms to obtain necessary supplies for the coming workweek. Sets traps for rodents and other pests, appropriately discarding trapped animals. Raises and lowers flags at the start and end of the workday. Performs minor maintenance on appliances as abilities allow. Might open and secure buildings at the start and end of the workday, respectively; might turn on and off lights and adjust heating or air conditioning, as appropriate. Might arrange furniture for meetings or other events. Performs related work as required. Minimum Training and Experience Some experience in custodial work or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate vacuum cleaners, carpet shampooers, brooms, mops, leaf blowers, etc. Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly. Medium work. Data Conception: Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable characteristics of data, people, or things. Interpersonal Communication: Ability to speak and/or signal people, receive instructions. Language Ability: Ability to read simple forms and prepare time sheets and maintenance reports. Intelligence: Apply common sense to carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Verbal Aptitude: Record and deliver information, explain procedures, and follow instructions. Must communicate effectively in standard English. Numerical Aptitude: Ability to utilize mathematical formulas; add and subtract. Form/Spatial Aptitude: Inspect items for proper length, width, and shape. Motor Coordination: Coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately when using janitorial equipment. Manual Dexterity: Handle a variety of janitorial items with minimal coordination. Color Discrimination: Not required. Interpersonal Temperament: Deal with people beyond giving instructions; adapt to stress. Physical Communication: Talk and hear. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities General knowledge of standard methods, materials, and equipment used in janitorial work. Some knowledge of cleaning procedures and cleaning materials. Ability to follow instructions. Ability to perform medium physical work. Exercise independent judgment and initiative in completing work assignments. Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
