IT Support and Systems Intern

Reports to: Director of Operations

FLSA Status: Full-Time or Part-Time

Position Summary:

The IT Support and Systems Intern supports The Well’s daily technology needs while gaining hands-on experience in information technology administration. This role assists with staff troubleshooting, equipment setup and inventory, Microsoft 365 support, technology onboarding, and documentation. The intern helps keep technology reliable and accessible so staff can focus on serving individuals and families.

The IT Support and Systems Intern works closely with the Director of Operations and receives technical supervision from the IT Administrator or a designated qualified IT mentor. Through guided assignments, shadowing, regular feedback, and a practical improvement project, the intern learns how technology supports behavioral health services and develops skills relevant to an IT Administrator role.

Qualifications:

1. Education & Experience

• Currently enrolled in or recently completed an information technology, computer science, cybersecurity, networking, or related program; equivalent technical training or practical learning experience may be considered.

• Coursework, personal projects, labs, volunteer work, and customer service experience are welcome. Professional IT experience and certifications are not required.

2. Technology & Troubleshooting Skills

• Basic familiarity with computers, common software, and Microsoft 365 applications.

• Interest in troubleshooting hardware, software, and connectivity issues using a step-by-step approach.

• Willingness to learn device setup, account administration, networking concepts, and tools such as Intune and Entra under supervision.

3. Administrative & Communication Skills

• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to maintain accurate records.

• Ability to explain basic technology tasks clearly and patiently to people with different technical skill levels.

• Ability to follow instructions, document work, communicate progress, and manage assigned priorities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Staff Technology Support

• Review assigned help requests during scheduled work hours and assist with routine computer, printer, tablet, phone, software, and connectivity issues.

• Document reported problems, troubleshooting steps, and outcomes; communicate progress and follow-up needs to staff and the technical mentor.

• Escalate complex problems, service disruptions, and suspected security concerns promptly.

2. Equipment Setup & Inventory

• Prepare and test workstations and devices using approved setup checklists.

• Maintain equipment inventory and assignment records; assist with equipment checkout, returns, and replacement tracking.

• Help organize technology supplies and prepare retired equipment for approved disposal under technical supervision.

3. Microsoft 365 & Systems Support

• Assist staff with Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, Word, Excel, and Zoom.

• Help update approved SharePoint content and organize Teams resources as directed.

• Observe or assist with account, license, and group tasks within delegated permissions. Practice device and identity management tasks in a training environment or under direct supervision.

4. Technology Onboarding & Staff Training

• Partner with HR and IT to prepare new hire technology checklists, equipment, and orientation materials.

• Assist employees with initial device use and approved technology orientation activities.

• Develop clear instructions and troubleshooting guides for common staff questions; obtain technical review before distribution.

5. Security, Documentation & Project Support

• Complete assigned confidentiality and security training, including HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2 training relevant to the role, before receiving system access.

• Access information only as authorized for assigned duties and follow approved procedures for handling devices and data. Use test or de-identified information for practice whenever possible.

• Assist with IT documentation, equipment specifications, or vendor quote comparisons for review.

• Complete one approved improvement project, such as a technology onboarding kit, inventory cleanup, or staff technology help guide.

6. Collaboration & Professional Development

• Participate in weekly mentor check-ins, assigned training, and selected IT planning or vendor meetings.
