Under immediate (HVAC Technician I) to general (HVAC Technician II) supervision, performs skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) systems and fixtures including refrigeration equipment, motors, pumps, compressors, valves, piping, duct work, mechanical and direct digital controls, and pneumatic devices; and performs related work as required.
Examples Of Typical Job Functions
- Performs skilled HVAC work, including the installation and repair of general HVAC systems and refrigeration equipment; inspects and performs tests on systems and equipment to identify defective parts and ensures proper functioning. Inspects facilities and buildings for damage and maintenance needs; recommends repairs as necessary; operates and maintains specialized equipment, including pumps, gauges, meters, and a variety of hand and power tools.
- Inspects, disassembles, repairs, maintains, and services various types of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment and systems, including valves, fans, compressors, motors, gaskets, filters, belts, fuses, tubing, controls, and thermostats; performs similar work on hot water and forced air systems; maintains, troubleshoots, repairs, and tests the performance of open loop, closed loop, and flow through water systems including evaporative coolers and condensers, cooling tower, chilled water loops and heated water loops.
- Adjusts, repairs and replaces ducting and air conditioning systems; services heating systems according to established guidelines; lights pilots; cleans out vents; inspects, maintains, operates and repairs thermostats and control systems.
- Maintains, analyzes, modifies, and repairs variable frequency drives and related controls.
- Tests, monitors, and adjusts water system chemical levels to provide proper protection against corrosion and scaling; retrofits equipment with CFC refrigerants to new HCFC refrigerants, blends, and HFC refrigerants.
- Develops wiring diagrams and layout drawings for system or equipment modifications or expansion; installs and connects power supply wiring and conduit for existing and new equipment.
- Programs and operates the computerized energy management system.
- Schedules and records periodic electrical testing; recommends or initiates modification or replacement of equipment which fails to meet acceptable operating standards.
- Works from diagrams, blueprints, layouts, work orders, verbal instructions, or other specifications to install and test HVAC systems or equipment.
- Meets with District's water treatment contractor and emergency management system contractor; review reports and assist with recommending any repairs or adjustments as needed.
- Estimates labor, materials, and equipment needed for assigned projects; monitors inventory levels of materials and equipment; orders, receives, and maintains inventory of materials and equipment as needed; provides recommendations regarding needed parts and suppliers.
- Depending on assignment, works collaboratively with on-call contractors and vendors, coordinating and inspecting assigned work; attends planning and progress meetings.
- Maintains work, time, and material records.
- Observes and complies with District and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
Education: Equivalent to a High School Diploma.
- HVAC Technician I – Two (2) years of journey-level experience in journeyman level HVAC and refrigeration maintenance and repair work.
- HVAC Technician II – Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience performing duties similar to a HVAC Technician I with the District or other similar agency.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Possession of a valid California Driver's License, to be maintained throughout employment.
- Possession of an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Refrigerant Containment Type IV Universal Technician Certification, to be maintained throughout employment.
Knowledge of:
- Principles, practices, methods, equipment, materials, and tools used in the maintenance and repair of District HVAC and refrigeration systems and fixtures, including applicable HVAC codes.
- Safe application, operation, and maintenance of tools and equipment used in the HVAC and refrigeration trade.
- Principles of water treatment related to heating and cooling systems.
- Principles and practices of refrigerant selection, containment, and retrofit.
- Principles and practices in installation, maintenance, and repairs of commercial icemakers.
- Electrical and mechanical theory, practices, tools and equipment.
- Occupational hazards and safety equipment and practices related to the work including confined space requirements.
- Basic arithmetic.
- Principles and procedures of record-keeping and reporting.
- District and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols.
- Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and District staff.
- The structure and content of the English language, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
- Modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and program, project, and task coordination, including computers and software programs relevant to work performed.
- Operational characteristics, and the safe and proper use of, machinery, tools, equipment, and materials necessary to perform assigned duties.
Ability to:
- Perform a variety of complex technical tasks in the installation, repair, and maintenance of District HVAC and refrigeration fixtures and systems.
- Skillfully and safely operate a variety of light equipment and power and hand tools used in the HVAC field.
- Troubleshoot HVAC problems.
- Determine materials, costs, and supplies required for HVAC repairs and maintenance projects; recommend purchases.
- Effectively develop and plan out jobs using appropriate cost control and scheduling methods.
- Estimate necessary materials and equipment to complete assignments.
- Prepare records and basic reports.
- Read, interpret, and apply a wide variety of technical information from manuals, drawings, specifications, layouts, blueprints, and electrical schematics.
- Make accurate arithmetic calculations.
- Maintain accurate logs, records, and basic written records of work performed.
- Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy and procedural (add legal if applicable) guidelines.
- Effectively use computer systems, software applications relevant to work performed, and modern business equipment to perform a variety of work tasks.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, using appropriate English grammar and syntax.
