Health Unit Coordinator

Job Summary Assists with coordination of care of patients in conjunction with the nursing staff, providers, and the multidisciplinary team. Supports clerical duties including patient admissions, transfers, discharge, and patient registration. Key Position Details 0.45 FTE (36 hours per 2 weeks) 12‑hour day/evening shifts Every 3rd weekend Shift length: 12 hours Hours per week: 18 Union Contract: Non‑Union Principal Responsibilities Perform clerical duties such as filing, mail and email distributions, copying, scanning, and faxing per unit protocol. Complete patient admissions, transfers, and discharges. Communicate patient care needs to nursing staff, including requests for assistance with activities of daily living. Process physician orders accurately and timely. Ensure accurate accommodation codes and billing charges are entered. Enter patient and caregiver information into the electronic medical record system. Order, validate, and store supplies and patient education materials. Assemble and organize patient charts when applicable. Answer phone calls and call lights promptly, forwarding to appropriate staff. Print Release of Information (ROI) packets for discharge to nursing homes or other facilities as needed. Manage unit keys and cards for float staff, ensuring they are returned at shift end. Review and explain authorization forms with patients, obtaining signatures when applicable. Direct patients to points of care and schedule procedures or appointments as needed. Room patients and assist with monitoring telemetry as necessary. Maintain a presence at the front desk for patient and family support and check‑in. Support and train new and existing staff and students. Transport unopened medication containers from pneumatic tube station or pharmacy to the designated storage location or RN. Present Medicare second notices of notification to patients for signature. Retrieve patient history and physical data as requested. Contribute to a safe environment for patients, visitors, and employees. Report environmental risks or equipment malfunctions to supervisor. Perform other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications At least 18 years of age. Education and/or experience to meet required functional competencies. 2+ years experience in a medical office or hospital setting preferred; certification as a Health Unit Coordinator not required. Preferred Qualifications High school diploma or GED. 2+ years experience with Windows‑based applications and keyboarding skills. Health Unit Coordinator graduate of a technical institute program. Medical terminology knowledge. Physical Demands Light work: Lifting weight up to 20 pounds occasionally; up to 10 pounds frequently. Pay Range $20.79 to $28.31 per hour.
