Summary Performs routine mechanical work on U.S. Navy shore facilities, waterborne vessels, surface ships and/or submarines. Tasks will be related to inspections, repairs, modernization and/or alterations. Duties and Responsibilities Proficient in the use of precision measurement equipment including scales, vernier calipers. Perform disconnects and connections of mechanical joints. Remove and install various equipment using sound engineering practices. Perform duties as Firewatch. Assist with cleaning up work area. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Computer Skills Must possess basic computer skills to enter data into different data basis. Education/Experience Must have completed a formal related course of study in trade through either a community college, technical or trade school, military training, formal company training program or an apprentice program. Must have 1-5 years of verifiable experience as a mechanic in an industrial environment (i.e., shipbuilding, ship repair or nuclear power plants). Certificates and Licenses Must be able to successfully pass a criminal background check and obtain and maintain a security badge for all military installations and civilian shipyards as needed. Equipment General Hand Tools Torque Wrenches Precision Measuring Instruments Knowledge, Skills and Other Abilities Must be able to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, written technical instructions and manuals. Must possess working knowledge of shipboard operating requirements. Understand material safety data sheets (MDS). Able to follow safety procedures.
