Emerging Technology & AI Governance & Enablement Lead

Role Description

Code for America is looking for a talented Emerging Technology & AI Governance & Enablement Lead who will shape how our staff engages with emerging AI tools by building the infrastructure, fluency, and trust that allows people to say "yes" safely. This role will ensure that Code for America adopts emerging AI technologies responsibly and aligns with organizational values and workforce obligations.

This role will report to the VP of Engineering and is expected to travel no more than 5% of the time. This is a remote position.

In this position you will:

• AI Governance & Policy
  • Own the full lifecycle of Code for America's AI Acceptable Use Policy: drafting foundational policy, socializing it across the organization, driving adoption, and revising it as tools, risks, and best practices evolve.
  • Advise on employee-facing implications of AI tool deployment, including acceptable use boundaries and monitoring practices.
  • Write governance frameworks and policy documents in accessible formats.
  • Serve as an internal consultant to teams exploring AI-assisted workflows.
  • Document and share learnings from team-level pilots.
  • Act as a liaison between IT/security and non-technical teams.
  • Partner with People Operations and Legal on AI-related employment policies.
  • Lead change management for AI-related transitions.
• Security Oversight and Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Partner closely with Security Engineering to integrate AI governance with the organization's security posture.
  • Collaborate with compliance stakeholders to assess AI tool risk and data privacy implications.
  • Monitor the evolving AI governance and security landscape.
  • Maintain the vendor inventory and conduct security reviews.
  • Coordinate security awareness programming.
• AI Enablement Programs & Training
  • Design, launch, and continuously improve AI enablement resources.
  • Facilitate workshops and learning sessions for staff.
  • Build and steward an internal AI Champions network.
  • Develop onboarding materials for new staff.

Qualifications

• 5–8+ years of experience in IT, compliance, security, learning & development, or organizational change.
• Demonstrated experience drafting and managing technology or information security policies.
• Experience with AI tools and understanding of AI governance best practices.
• Familiarity with technology policy and employment practices.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience designing and facilitating training or enablement programs.
• Ability to assess vendor security and compliance risk.
• Experience with change management principles.
• Comfort operating in ambiguity and building from the ground up.
