About the Position

Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Pediatric Psychiatric Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 7A-7P Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum of 1 year of Behavioral Health nursing required; Pediatric Behavioral Health experience preferred. License: State License required. Certifications: BLS required; MOAB obtained on site as part of orientation. Must-Have: De-escalation experience; experience with physical restraints; comfortable running groups; strong documentation skills. Description: As soon as possible start needed. Interviews will be facilitated, and manager approval is required. Must be willing to float between pediatric and adult units as needed. The facility is a free-standing acute inpatient facility. Patients are medically cleared before admission. Typical cases involve involuntary and voluntary admissions. Pediatric patients are ages 5-18 years old. Common pediatric diagnoses include eating disorders, depression, suicidal ideation, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, and gender dysphoria. Adult patients are primarily 18 years and older, including geriatric patients. Common adult diagnoses include schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, and occasionally eating disorders, suicidal ideation, and anxiety. The facility does not house forensic patients or inmates. Seclusion rooms are used when necessary. The unit provides traditional medical and psychiatric care along with specialized therapies like pet therapy, group sessions, and community gardens. Patient ratios for RNs are 1:5-6 during the day and 1:13 at night with resource support. Psych Tech support varies by day and night for both pediatric and adult units. Nurse supervisors are available in the evenings and on weekends. The nurse manager is available during the day and is open to addressing issues with staff. Clinical support includes a nurse practitioner on-site until 4 PM and a psychiatrist for daily rounds. Security is available on-site but does not respond to patient escalations; staff members handle these situations. Charting systems used include a designated electronic health record platform. Travelers may have opportunities to act as charge nurses, though this is not required. Floating is expected between all units. Travelers who are not comfortable floating should request manager approval. Weekend rotations are scheduled every other week. Travelers are expected to work holidays as part of their rotation. Time off requests of up to 7 days are subject to approval based on scheduling needs. Scheduling is modified self-scheduling, with travelers signing up for preferred shifts that are reviewed for coverage. Travelers will be informed when it is time to sign up for shifts. If a traveler does not sign up during that time, they will be automatically assigned vacant shifts. Debriefing forms are to be completed after any escalations. Management participates in reviewing escalated situations to assist staff. Scenario-based training for de-escalation practices occurs every other week.
