About the Position Agency: North Carolina Department of Revenue – Division of Examination Job Title: Revenue Field Auditor I (NS) Location: Raleigh service center, hybrid remote work schedule (minimum 3 days in the office) Employment Type: Full‑time, permanent Start Date: Effective July 1, 2025 Primary Responsibilities Conduct independent examinations of taxpayers’ financial records, focusing on audits with unique or special audit features or anticipated accounting, tax law, or investigative problems. Review and audit all tax schedules administered by the Department to ensure compliance with statutes and make appropriate adjustments based on available accounting records. Maintain an audit plan, including selection of audit candidates, scheduling taxpayer interviews, reviewing provided records, and preparing and submitting audit reports for review. Use discretion and good judgment to select taxpayers likely to be non‑compliant, prioritizing those whose adjustments generate additional tax revenues. Travel regularly to taxpayer locations within an assigned territory; limited overnight travel is required. Must possess reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license. Qualifications & Requirements Minimum education: Bachelor’s degree in business administration, economics, accounting, or a related field with at least eighteen semester hours of accounting from an accredited institution. Transcript (official or unofficial) must accompany the application; applications without a transcript will be considered incomplete. Preferred: Experience in auditing, accounting principles, and knowledge of the Internal Revenue Code and state tax laws. Proficiency with spreadsheet and word processing software; analytical skills for investigating complex tax compliance issues. Background checks, including federal and state criminal background checks that may include fingerprinting and verification of tax compliance. Eligibility for veteran’s preference: Applicants must attach a copy of Form DD‑214.
