Laboratory Manager

This position supports Stetson University by managing environmental and aquatic science laboratories on the main campus and at the Sandra Stetson Aquatic Center field station. Serving as a member of both the Department of Environmental Science and Studies (ENSS) & the Institute for Water and Environmental Resilience (IWER), the position requires proactive maintenance of laboratory equipment, collection and analysis of water quality and ecological field data, lead instructorship of introductory laboratory courses, and training and supervision of student research assistants. The Laboratory Manager works very closely with faculty to provide students with a rich array of practical experiences and technical skills in the environmental sciences that are in high demand among prestigious graduate programs, environmental consulting firms, and governmental agencies. This directly aligns with several of Stetson’s Strategic Priorities, including Experiential, Contemporary, and Integrative Learning, Student-Centered Success & Wellness, and Comprehensive Sustainability. Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities Maintain field and lab environmental science equipment at the Sandra Stetson Aquatic Center and the DeLand main campus, including conducting regular maintenance, ordering supplies, performing or coordinating repairs, and overseeing database management. Supervise 4-8 research assistants and/or interns each semester on applied research projects through IWER, with a particular focus on water quality collection and analysis. Teach one laboratory section of ENSS 140P or ENSS 141P each semester. In coordination with departmental faculty, develop and prepare lab and field exercises for all sections of the introductory ENSS course sequence. Assist with preparation and logistics for all other ENSS field-based laboratory courses, especially those involving field trips. Assist instructors for ENSS 201 Introduction to Mapping and GIS, ENSS 301 Geographic Information Systems, ENSS 325 Climate Adaptation and Planning, and ENSS 402 Landscape Ecology by ensuring that all GIS software and associated hardware are operating in GIS laboratories at Brown Hall and at the Sandra Stetson Aquatic Center. In coordination with the IWER Executive Director and other faculty, assist with field equipment installation, equipment maintenance, data collection, and data analysis in support of projects funded by grants, contracts, or other external sources. Assist in occasional University student recruitment events and IWER-sponsored community programs. The position requires lifting of up to 50 pounds, working outside in various conditions during all times of year, driving and maintaining a motorized pontoon boat, and driving of trucks, vans, and other vehicles into remote field sites. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Experience working with a diverse array of environmental field science equipment, including – but not limited to – discrete analyzers (e.g., SEAL AQ300), field autosamplers, Kjeldahl digester units, soil nutrient samplers, piezometers, lysimeters, water quality sondes, research-grade global positioning system (GPS) receivers, weather stations, and elevation collection units. Proficiency with development and management of large environmental science databases, including those developed through geographic information systems (GIS). Clear indication of ability to successfully teach and provide mentorship to undergraduate students. Ability to work independently in identifying and solving technical problems. At least 2 years of experience working in an environmental sciences laboratory setting. Must possess current driver license and an insurable driving record through the University’s insurance provider. Ideal Candidate Qualifications Previous experience teaching and/or managing an environmental sciences laboratory at a university. Specific knowledge about and experience working within central Florida’s marine, aquatic, and terrestrial ecosystems. Work Environment Includes a mixture of work within aquatic and environmental sciences laboratories at Stetson’s main DeLand campus, in laboratory classrooms as an instructor, and performing outside field work at the Sandra Stetson Aquatic Center and throughout the central Florida region. Regular travel to the Sandra Stetson Aquatic Center and coastal field monitoring stations in Volusia and Brevard counties is required. Frequent operation of a motorboat within the St. Johns River is also required.
