Position Overview
We are seeking a compassionate, dependable, and motivated Paraprofessional to join a supportive school team in South Burlington, Vermont. The Paraprofessional will work closely with classroom teachers, special education professionals, related service providers, and families to support students in accessing their education and developing greater independence.
This position is ideal for an individual who is passionate about working with students, understands the importance of individualized support, and can provide both academic and behavioral assistance in a positive school environment.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Provide direct instruction and classroom support consistent with each student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP).
Assist students in accessing grade-level academic standards by adapting materials, instructional methods, and environmental factors as directed by the classroom or supervising educator.
Support students in fully participating in classroom instruction and school activities.
Implement behavioral, communication, medical, and other specialized programs according to student plans and professional direction.
Provide personal care and assistance when needed, including ambulation, dressing, and toileting.
Follow established behavior-management, de-escalation, and safety procedures.
Provide CPR, first aid, or other medical procedures when appropriately trained.
Collect data, conduct task analysis, maintain records, and monitor student progress toward IEP goals.
Assist with planning instruction, interventions, and lessons using student data.
Collaborate with teachers, paraprofessionals, parents, healthcare professionals, and related service providers to promote student success.
Support students across a variety of settings, including classrooms, playgrounds, community locations, job sites, field trips, and other educational environments.
Assist students in developing independence and increasing participation in inclusive settings.
Participate in student planning, department, and committee meetings as requested.
Prepare instructional materials, organize classrooms, and assist with learning centers and activities.
Help supervise students during lunch, library, music, physical education, assemblies, free play, transitions, and hallway activities.
Assist with small-group activities and educational demonstrations.
Remain current with district programs, professional best practices, and required training.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required :
Associate’s Degree or 60+ college-level credits.
At least one year of successful experience working in a school or similar setting.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students and educational teams.
Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
Ability to follow IEPs, student support plans, and established school procedures.
Preferred :
Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Psychology, Mental Health, Special Education, or a related field.
Experience supporting students with disabilities or behavioral, academic, communication, or developmental needs.
Knowledge of disabilities, special education laws, instructional principles, teaching methods, and individualized programming.
Experience with data collection and behavioral or instructional interventions.
