Shift / Schedule: Day Shift, 12-Hour Days 6:45 AM 7:15 PM (3x12); 36 hours can be offered

Job Summary

This is a difficult, fast-paced Labor and Delivery unit requiring nurses who are comfortable working in a high-volume, high-acuity environment. The unit averages more than 300 births per month, approximately 20 births in a 24-hour period, and 3040 admits with 40 visits per day across 20 rooms. Double labor assignments are a daily occurrence on this unit. The unit is very fast paced, busier and higher acuity than might be normally expected, and 48-hour contracts may not be realistic due to how busy the unit is.

The Birthing Care Unit cares for obstetrical patients 16 weeks and greater for all intrapartum and for high-risk antepartum and postpartum care, as well as under-16-weeks high-risk patients on the high-risk maternity unit. The unit includes an obstetrical triage unit to allow for screening of patients prior to admission and to perform routine outpatient procedures such as antenatal fetal surveillance, intravenous hydration, and medication administration. Scheduled and unscheduled Cesarean Births and rescue cervical cerclage are performed.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide intrapartum care for obstetrical patients 16 weeks and greater
• Provide high-risk antepartum and postpartum care
• Care for under-16-weeks high-risk patients on the high-risk maternity unit
• Perform and support obstetrical triage including screening of patients prior to admission
• Perform and assist with routine outpatient procedures including antenatal fetal surveillance, intravenous hydration, and medication administration
• Assist with and support scheduled and unscheduled Cesarean Births
• Assist with rescue cervical cerclage procedures
• Manage double labor assignments as a daily occurrence on the unit
• Float as required to Special Maternity Care high-risk OB unit
• May be required to precept/orient new staff members to the unit as needed
• Work every other weekend; minimum of 6 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule

Required Skills

• Ability to circulate in the OR
• Sterile vaginal exam competency
• Competency in immediate newborn care
• Experience in a large/high-volume Labor and Delivery or similar setting
• Proficiency with PYXIS, EPIC, and SBAR
• Strong adaptability to a fast-paced, high-acuity environment with double labor assignments

Preferred Skills

• RN with circulate to OR experience (strongly preferred)

Education Requirements

• BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) required
• AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring certification required
• NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification required

Required Experience

• Minimum 2 years of Labor and Delivery experience required to be comfortable working on this unit, as it can be challenging for less experienced nurses; 3 years preferred
• Must have experience with a unit volume of greater than 300 births per month
• Experience in a large/high-volume similar Labor and Delivery setting required (first-time travelers accepted if this criterion is met)

Work Environment / Physical Requirements

• Nurse-to-patient ratio: 2:1
• High-volume unit: average 20 births in 24 hours, 3040 admits, 40 visits/day, 20 rooms
• Double labor assignments are a daily occurrence
• Float required as needed to Special Maternity Care high-risk OB unit
• Weekend requirement: every other weekend, minimum of 6 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule
• Unit orientation: 24.0 hours
• Scrubs provided (blue)
• Flu vaccination required; medical/religious exemptions only

Important Notes

• RTO (Return to Origin) after booking is NOT allowed and is NOT allowed to be worked out onsite. Any call-offs or additional RTO on the unit could possibly result in a contract cancellation and DNR (Do Not Rehire).
• RTO maximum: 7 days for AYA Auto Offer.
• The unit will accept 1326 week contracts.
• The unit will accept first-time travelers, but the candidate should have experience in a large/high-volume similar setting.
• Local candidates are accepted.
• 48-hour contracts may not be realistic on this unit due to how busy it is.
