Position Type: High School Teaching/ Media Specialist (9-12) Date Posted: 3/6/2026 Location: Bowdon High School Date Available: 07/29/2026 Media Specialist The media specialist is a leader and a collaborating member of the instructional team, planning with the administrator and teachers to identify, select, and provide the best resources to meet learner needs. The media specialist must ensure a unified media program which is effectively managed, instructionally related, supportive of learning in a variety of formats, and accessible to all. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Functions essential to attaining job objectives: The media specialist job consists of five roles: LEADER: The media specialist is a leader in developing 21st‑century learning skills throughout the school environment, ensuring that students learn to become effective digital citizens. INSTRUCTIONAL PARTNER: The media specialist collaborates with classroom teachers to develop lessons that promote critical thinking, information literacy, social skills, and cultural competencies. INFORMATION SPECIALIST: The media specialist uses technology to supplement resources; assists in creating engaging learning products; connects with the global community; communicates with students, teachers, and the community; and provides access to resources. The media specialist is also an expert in the ethical use of print and digital information. TEACHER: The media specialist supports student achievement through instruction in the Common Core Standards, Georgia Performance Standards, and advocates for reading for pleasure and reading comprehension in a variety of formats. The media specialist builds a collection that meets the needs of a diverse group of learners. PROGRAM ADMINISTRATOR: The media specialist ensures that all members of the learning community have access to resources, experiences, and instruction that meets a variety of needs and interests. Strategic Goal Area I – Student Achievement Serves as a specialist in books and other materials, exert leadership in evaluation and selection of resources for the collection of school library, guide and assist in the use of instructional material and technology. Serves as a resource consultant to the teachers. Serves as information literacy expert for the school. Establishes a flexible schedule that allows for multiple types of learning simultaneously. Establishes a space that is supportive of multiple kinds of learning; e.g., whole group, small group, individual. Plans and implements cooperatively with the principal and faculty a program of instruction that teaches students to use various forms of electronic media. Promotes literacy in a variety of formats through instruction and collaborations with teachers. Plans collaboratively with the instructional staff to integrate information literacy skills instruction with the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards. Models an inquiry‑based approach to learning and the information search process that supports critical and higher‑order thinking skills. Produces locally designed materials for and with students and instructional staff. Strategic Goal Area II – Stakeholder Engagement and Loyalty Maintains effective relationships with other school media specialists, public and regional libraries in the community. Implements, coordinates, and facilitates the building media committee. Seeks input regarding the media program from all stakeholders including students, educators, and community. Communicates effectively with students, peers, administration, parents and public. Establishes multiple tools for communicating information about the media program resources, events, and services. Provides access to materials in all formats, including up‑to‑date, high‑quality literature (both fiction and non‑fiction) to develop and strengthen a love of reading for pleasure and for information. Creates and fosters a climate that motivates effective utilization of media facilities, resources, and services. Exhibits pleasant behavior and projects a positive image when dealing with students, peers, administration, parents and public. Strategic Goal Area III – Efficient and Effective Operational Processes Exercises leadership in planning a media program which includes information literacy. Directs the operation of resources and electronic media for an efficient and functional media center. Adheres to federal copyright law/guidelines and system board policies. Develops expertise in the ethical use of digital and print information and instructs students and teachers on the proper use. Completes records and reports for the evaluation of services. Strategic Goal Area IV – Continuous System and School Improvement Develops a strategic plan for continuous improvement of the media program. Informs principal, staff and community about media program objectives, needs, and outcomes. Develops media budget proposals based on recommendations of the media committee. Allocates state and local budgets through strategic planning that supports the School Improvement Plan. Plans and provides information literacy, media literacy, and technology‑related staff development activities for teachers. Implements and evaluates the utilization of instructional innovations and related educational technology. Instructs and assists teachers and students in using, evaluating, and producing information and ideas using a variety of tools, resources, and technology. Collaborates with district instructional technology specialist to explore and implement new electronic media into instruction. Provides teachers and students with instruction and resources that reflect current information trends and anticipate changes in technology and education. Performs such other duties and tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time. OTHER EXPECTATIONS Adhere to the Code of Ethics for Educators in Georgia. Demonstrate prompt and regular attendance/timeliness. Complete assignments and requirements on time and in compliance with directions. Maintain accurate, complete, and appropriate records and file reports promptly. Maintain confidentiality of information and records for students and staff. JOB STANDARDS (Minimum qualifications needed to perform essential job functions) Three years teaching experience. S‑5 certification. Such alternatives to the above as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable. JOB LOCATION (Place(s) where work is performed) Local school site. EQUIPMENT (machines, devices, tools, etc., used in job performance) Current technology.
