Find your next opportunity today!**Description of Work**The primary duties of this position are to provide instruction, leadership and program coordination for students in American Sign Language, following the North Carolina World Language Essential Standards for Classical Languages, Dual and Heritage Languages and Modern Languages, be able to conduct Classroom Sign Language Assessments (CSLA) or Sign Language Proficiency Interviews (SLPI). The ASL Lead Educator will mentor other ASL instructors on effective classroom tools and techniques then provide timely feedback. This role combines teaching, assessment and coaching responsibilities to ensure quality ASL instruction to our students. The position will assess student language development upon admission to NCSD and will coordinate training for students in ASL by maintaining a file of each student’s ASL activities. Then at pre-determined intervals, will assess student language development to determine if additional educational services and resources are needed. This position requires direct contact with students and their families about their results of sign language communication skills and the scheduling of training opportunities. This position will teach ASL classes for academic credit to Deaf students in grades K-12. High school students taking the class will earn world language academic credits, which will assist them in meeting the world language requirement mandated by most four-year colleges and universities. \*\*\* This is a full time 10-month (paid over 12 months) position. \*\*\* Pursuant to House Bill 11, all employees, hired in classified (and certified) positions on or after July 1, 2024, are employed pursuant to Chapter 115C of the General Statutes. About the North Carolina School for the Deaf: The North Carolina School for the Deaf is a specialty school for Deaf/Hard of Hearing students, ages 3 (three) to 22 (twenty-two), with a catchment area encompassing the 46 westernmost counties in North Carolina. Established in 1894, the school provided significant milestones in deaf and blind education. North Carolina School for the Deaf (NCSD) operates per the academic calendar, from August to May, with additional summer programming in June. Students are typically present on campus Sunday afternoons through Friday afternoons. In general, support services and administration operate year-round. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Management Preferences: \*Broad knowledge of the principles and practices of current ASL educational trends in curriculum and instruction. \*Comprehensive knowledge of the methods, materials, procedures and practices of educating Deaf and hard of hearing students, including Deaf and hard of hearing students with additional disabilities.**Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences****Planning:*** Develop annual goals and short-term instructional objectives aligned with curriculum standards* Design and implement daily ASL lesson plans* Select and apply effective teaching strategies and instructional techniques* Plan for both independent instruction and individualized student support* Identify, gather, develop, and adapt instructional materials to meet diverse student needs, including: + Primary resources + Supplementary materials + Audiovisual tools* Differentiate instruction to ensure all students can achieve success* Coordinate and evaluate comprehensive lesson plans for each class**Classroom Instruction:*** Begin each lesson with a review of previously taught material* Clearly introduce lesson objectives and instructional goals* Demonstrate fluency and precision in ASL and spoken communication (as appropriate)* Present content in a manner that is accessible and developmentally appropriate for students* Use relevant examples and demonstrations to reinforce ASL concepts and skills* Assign tasks that promote high levels of student success* Use questioning strategies that match student ability levels* Maintain an appropriate instructional pace, adjusting as needed for comprehension* Ensure student mastery of: + Expressive ASL skills + Receptive ASL skills* Clearly assign and explain homework expectations* Summarize key concepts and learning outcomes at the end of each lesson**Supplementary Teaching Duties:*** Evaluate student performance and develop individualized instructional plans* Participate in meetings related to ASL students, including IEP-related discussions* Maintain effective classroom management and discipline* Collect, assess, and return student assignments in a timely manner* Create a positive and engaging classroom environment, including visual displays and organization* Revise, update, and implement ASL curriculum as needed* Meet regularly with school leadership to discuss student progress* Maintain required North Carolina teaching licensure and certifications* Engage in ongoing professional development through: + Workshops + Training sessions + Conferences + College coursework* Perform additional duties and extracurricular assignments as required* Support students in achieving fluency and literacy in ASL by course completion**IEP & Student Monitoring Responsibilities*** Develop and implement ASL-related IEP goals* Conduct parent conferences regarding student progress* Monitor and document progress toward IEP goals, determining mastery or non-mastery* Communicate with parents and administration when student performance falls below a 77 average* Maintain accurate records, including: + Attendance (homeroom) + Monthly reports**Additional Duties*** Supervise lunchroom and other assigned non-instructional duties**Minimum Education and Experience**Some state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both.
