Job Summary

Interpreter/Translator Aide

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Training in speech pathology or communication disorders.
2. Be a member in good standing of the National Registry for Interpreters for the Deaf

REPORTS TO:

Principal and Teacher assigned.

SUPERVISES:

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Ability to implement behavioral plans and execute duties related to the goals and objectives of the plan.
2. Ability to collaborate and communicate with administration, principals, teachers, and parents to ensure the implementation of the Individual Education Plan.
3. Ability to observe and execute duties consistent with that of the special education teachers.
4. Ability to comprehend and interpret both oral and written directives relevant to instructional procedures and other classroom activities.
5. Possession of effective skills in both oral and written communication to assist and compliment the special education teacher in program implementation.
6. Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed.

JOB GOAL:


To provide interpretations to the deaf or hard-of-hearing student(s).

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Interprets or transliterates messages from an auditory to a visual system so that the student can understand, whether it be American sign language, signing exact English, oral interpreting or cued speech.
2. Interprets or transliterates messages from a visual system to a spoken English.
3. Determines the student's most appropriate mode of communication and delivers messages in that mode.
4. Collaborates with teachers working with a deaf or hard-of-hearing child concerning language assessment and development.
5. Is familiar with technology related to deafness such as hearing aids and auditory training systems.
6. Teaches other professionals and/or normally hearing students the visual system used by the dead or hard-of-hearing student(s) in that particular school.
7. Maintains appropriate physical health including rest periods and exercises for hands and arms.
8. Demonstrates professional conduct as outlined in the Code of Ethics by the National Registry for Interpreters for the Deaf.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Salary and length of contract to be determined by the Board.

EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions for Evaluation of Support Personnel.
