GRAPHIC DESIGNER III – CAPITAL DISTRICT / CULTURAL RESOURCES / LELAND STANFORD MANSION STATE HISTORIC PARK 

The reporting location for this position is Leland Stanford Mansion State Historic Park (SHP) in Sacramento, California. This position will work under the direction of the Museum Curator III, (Capital District Cultural Resources Program Manager).

The Capital District includes Museums and Historic Parks that have active exhibit, interpretation, and cultural programs. This position works closely with the District’s exhibits team and the District’s program managers to successfully plan, coordinate, and implement the District’s graphic and audiovisual projects through the design of websites, signage, publications, virtual tours, video content, and exhibit elements such as layout, branding, panels, banners, and interactives. This position is a unique opportunity to be part of a team that plans and implements exhibits throughout the Capital District including at the California State Capitol Museum, Sutter’s Fort, and the State Indian Museum.

The selected candidate is required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting prior to appointment.

Occasional travel may be required. Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a state owned or leased vehicle.

Working Conditions

Office Settings: Performs work at a computer workstation, conducts meetings, prepares designs, reviews drawings, and completes administrative tasks in standard office environments. Work may involve extended periods of sitting, repetitive motions, and regular use of computers, printers, and office equipment.

Historic Buildings: Works at the California State Capitol Museum, Leland Stanford Mansion SHP, and other historic structures. These environments may include restricted spaces, temperature-controlled rooms, low-light areas, and the need to follow strict handling guidelines to protect historic materials. May require navigation of stairs, confined work areas, extended standing, bending, and occasional lifting up to 25 pounds.

Workshop / Warehouse Environments: Works regularly in the Exhibits Shop in West Sacramento, which involves the use of equipment such as latex plotters and 3D printers. Requires standing for long periods, bending, and lifting or moving materials up to 25 pounds. Follows safety protocols related to shop equipment, dust, noise, and chemical use (paints, adhesives, solvents).

Please describe your experience creating graphic products to support exhibits or other public educational projects. What steps did you take to craft designs that conveyed the core themes of the project to its audiences? How did you incorporate stakeholder feedback into the creation of the designs? How did you evaluate the effectiveness of your designs when the project was completed?

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

• Plans, organizes, and implements all graphic services for the Capital District

• Serves as lead designer and oversees district-wide graphic needs

• Collaborates closely with Exhibit Designer/Coordinator and Cultural Resources Program Manager

• Produces advanced, state-of-the-art graphic design for print, digital, multimedia, exhibits, signage, branding, and web

• Develops conceptual sketches, mock - ups, proofs, and multimedia samples

• Conducts photo/video research, editing, retouching, and digital enhancement

• Uses and troubleshoots graphic design software, especially Adobe Creative Cloud

• Ensures design accessibility and adherence to departmental branding and ADA guidelines

• Coordinates projects with staff, managers, contractors, vendors, and stakeholders

• Prepares project correspondence, presentations, and reports; tracks revisions and approvals

• Selects materials, fabrication methods, and assists with production as needed

• Maintains project files, permissions documentation, and digital/hard - copy archives

• Manages budgets, purchasing, and accounts related to graphic services

• Oversees vendor contracts including web design, reprographics, and equipment maintenance

• Manages web design contract for California State Capitol Museum website

• Provides training to staff in design, multimedia, fabrication, and software

• Acts as lead worker for Cultural Resources Program staff

• Works in office, museum, historic buildings, and exhibit shop environments

• Occasionally travels; must have valid driver’s license

• Performs other duties as required for operational continuity

• Requires strong visual acuity, creativity, and advanced graphic design expertise

• Desirable qualifications include degrees or certifications in art, design, visual communications, or computer graphics
