Incumbents ensure the safety and security of municipal streets, buildings, residences, and neighborhoods by enforcing ordinances and laws, responding to calls, conducting investigations, and providing other assigned law‑enforcement duties. Perform community and problem‑oriented policing activities. Conduct investigations by locating evidence, victims, witnesses, and suspects. Gather information and conduct interviews. Document facts and elements of a crime. Make arrests when necessary. Write reports. Operate a motor vehicle and patrol assigned areas. Testify in court. Participate in training sessions as assigned. Serve as a detention/booking officer. Serve warrants. Control traffic. Operate and maintain law‑enforcement equipment and weapons. Secure crime scenes. Administer first aid. Perform related work as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Law‑enforcement principles, practices, and equipment. Investigative processes and evidence preservation. Community and problem‑oriented policing methods. Interview techniques. Arizona criminal justice and court systems. Traffic control methods. Radio and communication protocols. Safe driving and city geography. Computerized law‑enforcement information systems. First‑aid principles. Personnel safety and occupational hazards. Report preparation with accurate grammar. Basic mathematics. Qualifications Minimum Education: High school diploma, GED, or equivalent; or a degree from an accredited college/university. Age: Must be at least 21 years of age. Citizenship: United States citizen. Driver’s License: Arizona Class D. AZPOST certification: Must be certified at hire or within 3 months if out‑of‑state. Specialty Pay and Benefits Field Training Officer (FTO): 5% of base hourly rate. Specialty Assignment Pay: 5% of base hourly rate for assignments in gang task force, neighborhood enforcement team, canine unit, traffic motor unit, or SWAT. Deferred Compensation: $100 employer contribution per pay period. Uniform Allowance: $700 at academy graduation or upon start, up to $1,400 per year. Bilingual Pay: $0.75 per hour. Shift Pay: $0.50 to $1.00 per hour. On‑call Pay: $3.00 per hour. Call Back: 4 hours at the overtime rate. Court Appearance: Minimum 2 hours. Health and Dental Insurance: City pays 100% of employee‑only premiums. Tuition Assistance: 100% reimbursement up to $5,250 per year. Vacation Leave: Up to 80 hours first year, plus 10 hours per year of service, up to 180 hours. Sick Leave: Up to 96 hours per year. Service Award Leave: Up to 40 hours per year. Holiday Pay: 10 hours per holiday for 10 holidays. Sick Leave Conversion at Retirement: Compensation 40% for 1,000 hours; 60% for 1,400 hours. Physical and Work Environment Requirements Physical activities: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, running, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, repetitive motions. Work conditions: inside/outside, in vehicles, moderate exposure to hazardous materials, extreme temperatures, disruptive people, noise.
