Transportation Planner

HNTB is seeking a highly motivated and talented professional to join our growing Transportation Practice within the New York Planning & Environment Group. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to key transportation planning projects, including bike, ped, rail, bus and freight mobility improvements, while supporting New York City clients on a wide range of planning efforts. The successful candidate will apply advanced data analysis skills, sound planning or engineering judgment, and a broad base of technical knowledge to deliver impactful solutions. Responsibilities Research data sources, gather data, and conduct analysis of data for use in projects. Identify planning and analysis strategies using tools such as GIS, traffic, or safety software to manipulate data, assess scenarios, and perform project analysis. Investigate, evaluate, and provide recommendations on planning processes and technical solutions that best meet the project needs. Lead aspects of internal and external coordination with project team members, including other discipline areas involved with the project. Participate in client meetings and interactions. Lead preparation of maps, exhibits, and presentation materials for projects. Conduct or direct research on issues, policies, and concepts pertaining to planning, and formulate recommendations. Participate in the development of conceptual planning alternatives for urban and transportation planning projects. Write major sections of and lead production of plans, studies, reports, and environmental documents for transportation and infrastructure projects. Participate in public process and stakeholder facilitation. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Planning, Geography, Engineering, or related field and 4 years related professional experience. Master's Degree in Urban Planning, Geography, Engineering, or related field and 3 years of relevant experience. Preferred Qualifications Master's degree in Urban Planning or related field. Professional Engineer (PE), American Institute of Certified Planner (AICP), Professional Transportation Planner (PTP). What You’ll Bring Proficiency in professional demand modeling or traffic simulation software (e.g., Synchro, VISSIM, AIMSUN); familiarity with pedestrian simulation tools is a plus. Advanced Excel skills, including complex formulas and VBA; working knowledge of programming languages such as Python and/or R for data analysis and modeling is a plus. Demonstrated experience in transit planning and analysis, and/or the design and evaluation of pedestrian and bicycle facilities. Ability to synthesize data and draft clear, well-structured reports, including compiling and integrating contributions from multiple sources to support findings and recommendations. Experience contributing to and delivering presentations, effectively communicating technical analyses and insights to internal teams and stakeholders. Pay Range Approximate pay range for New York: $74,417.85 – $139,533.46. The national range is the same.
