Heavy Equipment Operator – Front-End Loader & Backhoe

We are seeking a skilled Heavy Equipment Operator to join our construction team. This full-time position is responsible for safely and efficiently operating front-end loaders and backhoes in support of site development, excavation, grading, and material handling activities. The ideal candidate is safety-focused, mechanically inclined, and enjoys working in a fast-paced outdoor construction environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate front-end loaders and backhoes to perform excavation, trenching, grading, loading, and material-moving activities.
  • Conduct daily pre-shift inspections and basic preventive maintenance to ensure equipment is operating safely.
  • Follow all OSHA regulations, company policies, and job site safety procedures.
  • Assist with site preparation, backfilling, debris removal, and other project-related tasks as needed.
  • Read and interpret site plans, grades, and project specifications to complete work accurately.
  • Coordinate with supervisors and crew members to maintain efficient job site operations.
  • Maintain accurate records of equipment usage, inspections, maintenance, and daily activities.
  • Support additional construction operations involving excavators, dozers, and other heavy equipment when required.
  • Keep work areas organized and free from potential safety hazards.
  • Operate equipment in a manner that protects personnel, equipment, and property.
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum 2–3 years of experience operating front-end loaders and backhoes in a construction environment.
  • Proven ability to perform excavation, grading, trenching, and material handling tasks.
  • Strong knowledge of construction site safety practices and OSHA requirements.
  • Ability to read and follow site plans, grade stakes, and verbal or written instructions.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to lift 50+ pounds and perform physically demanding work.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Attention to detail when performing inspections and maintaining documentation.
Preferred Qualifications
  • CDL (Commercial Driver's License) preferred but not required.
  • Experience operating additional equipment such as excavators, dozers, and other earthmoving machinery.
  • Familiarity with preventive maintenance and equipment troubleshooting.
  • Experience completing equipment logs, inspection reports, and related documentation.
  • Reliable attendance, strong work ethic, and ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Waterloo, NE. The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $28.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment. Benefits are subject to change and may be subject to specific elections, plan, or program terms.
