Medical Technologist Travel Job Details

• Weekly Estimated Pay: $1,690–$1,820
• Assignment Type: Travel contract
• Location: Madison, Wisconsin
• Duration: Approximately 26 weeks
• Start Date: December 14, 2026
• Schedule: Five 8-hour day shifts per week
• Shift Hours: 7:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m.
• Weekend Rotation: Approximately one weekend every four weeks
• Work Setting: High-volume hospital microbiology laboratory
• Float Requirement: Travelers may be required to float as needed
• Local Candidate Policy: Candidates residing within 50 miles are not eligible

Medical Technologist Job Requirements

• At least 3 years of recent experience in a hospital microbiology laboratory
• Experience reading complex microbiology cultures, with 3–5 years of culture-reading experience preferred or required based on assignment needs
• Experience in a large hospital environment, ideally with 300 or more beds
• ASCP MT, ASCP-M, or ASCP-MLS certification required
• Bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science, medical technology, clinical microbiology, or a related field required
• Demonstrated competency in high-volume microbiology testing and clinical laboratory procedures
• Strong independent decision-making, troubleshooting, and problem-resolution skills
• Ability to work effectively with laboratory colleagues, physicians, and clinical staff
• Seasonal influenza vaccination required; medical or religious exemptions may be considered

Microbiology Medical Technologist Responsibilities

• Perform clinical laboratory testing of varying complexity within the microbiology department
• Receive, accession, process, and plate patient specimens accurately and efficiently
• Perform Gram stains, culture plating, cytospin procedures, organism identification, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing
• Read and interpret complex aerobic and anaerobic cultures with minimal training
• Perform PCR and rapid molecular testing, including assays for influenza, group B Streptococcus, MRSA, Staphylococcus aureus, and COVID-19
• Perform rapid identification testing, including strep serology, indole, coagulase, catalase, and oxidase testing
• Use rapid test kits for RSV, Streptococcus, H. influenzae, and C. difficile testing
• Report accurate and timely test results while following clinical laboratory quality assurance and safety standards
• Perform advanced equipment troubleshooting, maintenance, and problem resolution
• Demonstrate sound technical judgment and take on teaching or training responsibilities as needed
• Maintain flexibility to support laboratory operations and float as needed
