Degree in American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreting, certified ASL Interpreter credentials, and 1+ year of experience as an ASL Interpreter in educational settings. Applicants who do not meet these qualifications will not be considered.
Exciting opportunity for a Sign Language Interpreter to work one-on-one with a high school student in a supportive educational setting near Marion, NC! This full-time contract position is ideal for professionals passionate about empowering students who are deaf or hard of hearing through effective communication and advocacy.
Candidates with a 3.5 EIPA or RID certification are especially encouraged to apply, as these credentials ensure the interpreter can provide the highest quality services in an academic environment. The school is conveniently located within a reasonable commute from Hickory, East Asheville, and Lincolnton, making it a great option for interpreters in western North Carolina.
Qualifications:
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and interpreting educational content
- 3.5 EIPA score or RID certification (preferred)
- Previous experience supporting students in a school setting is a plus
- Strong understanding of confidentiality and ethical guidelines in educational interpretation
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Commitment to fostering an inclusive and positive learning environment
- Ability to work full-time during school hours on a contract basis
Responsibilities:
- Provide direct sign language interpretation for a high school student in academic classes and related school activities
- Facilitate clear communication between the student, educators, and peers
- Adapt interpretation style to fit different classroom dynamics and subjects
- Maintain accurate records and collaborate with educational staff
- Support the student’s independence and participation in all aspects of school life
- Uphold professional guidelines and advocate for accessibility as needed
