Summary and Essential Functions:

• Obtain blood samples and prepare them for analysis and distribution
• Instruct patients in appropriate specimen collection procedures
• Determine appropriate tubes, sample types, and collection timing for the various laboratory tests.
• Responsible for receiving specimens from in-house and off-site clinics/agencies and determine their acceptability for testing.
• Navigate and research orders in Cerner, modify orders, and transmit orders to Cerner efficiently and accurately.
• Accurate and timely accessioning of patient and testing information into the laboratory information system (LIS) and initial troubleshooting of problems.
• Responsible for the general cleanliness and appearance of the phlebotomy area of the laboratory. Tasks involve organizing or removing clutter and related duties.

• Resolve any discrepancies with patient orders
• Scheduling patients for timed Glucose Tolerance Testing

• Acts as a liaison between laboratory services and other hospital services, striving to maintain good working relations with all hospital services in order to further the goals of the hospital.

• Cross-train in processing pathology specimen
• Prepare specimens for transport to reference lab

Qualifications:

• Meticulous in transcribing data to computer, able to follow established protocols to ensure correct identity throughout all processes
• Ability to multitask
• Professional appearance
• Familiarity with ICD-10 codes
• General knowledge of laboratory tests, TAT, special requirements and availability of reference laboratory testing
• Ability to discern and effectively give attention to detail
• Requires strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to follow written and verbal instructions
• Excellent typing skills required for computer data entry
• Excellent organizational skills, and client relation/interpersonal skills

Experience/Specialized Skills: Minimum of one year post high school training in health related fieldMinimum of one year phlebotomy experience requiredRequired Education/Course(s)/Training:High School DiplomaPreferred Certification/Registration:ASCP, Registered Phlebotomist Technician
