Utility Maintenance Worker I/II - Public Works Full Time 6000 Series Lancaster, CA, US 4 days ago Requisition ID: 1578 Salary Range: $28.39 To $40.04 Hourly Closing Date: Friday July 10th, 9:00 PM [PST] or once 400 applications have been received Position: Utility Maintenance Worker I/II Department: Public Works - Yard Utility Maintenance Worker I Hourly Range: $28.39 - $36.22 (Union- 6000 Series) Utility Maintenance Worker II Hourly Range: $31.37 - $40.04 (Union- 6000 Series) Benefits eligible & 401(a) payment equal to 5% of base salary Job Summary: A Utility Maintenance Worker I/II performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of sewer, reclaimed water, and drainage systems facilities. Maintenance Worker I This is the entry-level class in the Utility Maintenance Worker series. Incumbents work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks, progressing to general supervision as procedures and processes are learned. The Utility Maintenance Worker I class is distinguished from the II level by the performance of less than the full range of duties assigned to the II level. Receives immediate supervision from the Lead Utility Maintenance Worker and/or Public Works Supervisor (Utility Services). May receive technical and/or functional supervision from a Utility Maintenance Worker II as appropriate. Maintenance Worker II This is the journey-level class in the Utility Maintenance Worker series and is distinguished from the Utility Maintenance Worker I by the ability to perform the full range of duties assigned and lead responsibility related to specific projects, with only occasional instruction or assistance as unusual or unique situations arise. Positions in this class are part of a career progression series and are typically filled by employees who advance from the Utility Maintenance Worker I level. Receives general supervision from a Lead Utility Maintenance Worker and/or Public Works Supervisor (Utility Services). May exercise technical and/or functional supervision over Utility Maintenance Workers I as appropriate. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: General - Sewer/Drainage/Reclaimed Water Install, repair, upgrade, and/or replace manholes, fire hydrants, valves, meters, and meter vaults. Exercise valves according to preventive maintenance schedules and test water volume and pressure. Excavate concrete, pavement, and dirt and set up concrete forms as necessary, and backfill open trenches and complete surfaces “to finish” as appropriate. Set up traffic control for work sites, including cones, signs, and barricades; and direct traffic around work sites. Operate leak detection and pipe location equipment relative to excavation, tapping, and repairing mains and lines/inspect and assess leaks. Operate a variety of equipment including large trucks and medium-sized construction equipment, such as vactors, rodders, CCTV, loaders, backhoes, trenching machines, and compressors, as well as pipe threaders, sandblasters, and concrete saws. Read and replace water meters and related mechanisms, including disassembly, cleaning, inspection, replacement, and testing of parts; maintain related records; prepare water service for use including installation of water meters and backflow prevention devices. Read and understand sewer/drainage/recycled water system maps, pipeline drawings, and blueprints, including Underground Service Alert markings and identification. Transport construction equipment to and from work sites; perform routine preventive maintenance on tools, equipment, and vehicles used in the work; stock vehicles with an adequate supply of tools and equipment. Conduct limited technical inspections of sewer/drainage/recycled water system improvements performed by private contractors; perform water disinfecting, sampling, and testing in the field; inspect and replace disinfection equipment. Keep records related to work, materials, and maintenance activities, including confined space entry; may use a computer to enter and retrieve information related to work assignments and recordkeeping. Excavate, inspect, flush, clean and repair sewer, reclaimed water, drainage mains, lines, and laterals; clean and maintain sewer, reclaimed water, and drainage structures; maintain booster pumping station, sewage lift station, and stormwater pump stations. Notify customers of water shutdowns and investigate and resolve related problems within the scope of responsibility. Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service. The duties listed above are not intended to be all-inclusive. An employee may also perform other related duties as assigned by their immediate supervisor. This position is considered non-exempt. Minimum Qualifications and Desired Skills: General High School Diploma or equivalent. One (1) year of experience in field construction and maintenance work. Possession of a valid Class C California driver’s license is required; a DOT Class B California driver’s license with tanker endorsement must be obtained by the end of the 6th month probationary period. Knowledge of uses and purposes of general construction tools and equipment; City policies, rules, and regulations; principles and practices of work safety; basic computer skills. Ability to perform unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in a variety of utility construction and maintenance activities; perform heavy manual labor; on a continuous basis, know and understand operations and observe safety rules; intermittently analyze problem equipment; identify and locate equipment; interpret work orders; remember equipment location; and explain job to others; be on-call outside of regular work schedule, as assigned. Utility Maintenance Worker I Possession of a CWEA Collection System Maintenance Grade I certificate or ability to obtain certification within 12 months of hire. Utility Maintenance Worker II Knowledge of methods, techniques, tools, and operating characteristics of mechanical equipment used in the construction, maintenance, and repair of sewer/reclaimed water systems facilities. Ability to independently perform routine semi-skilled and skilled work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of sewer/drainage/recycled water systems facilities. Possession of a CWEA Collection System Maintenance Grade II certificate. Working Conditions/Physical Requirements: Office and field environment: Travel from site to site; exposure to noise and all types of weather and temperature conditions; exposure to hazardous traffic conditions; work in or around water; work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces and rough terrain; work unusual and prolonged work schedules; work multiple shifts during emergencies, seasonally‑caused circumstances, or special projects. Ability to work in a confined space with limited egress availability.
