Newport News Shipbuilding partners with the Virginia Ship Repair Association and local community colleges to offer Marine Trades Training (MTT) programs. The courses are offered once a month with 8–10 students per class, and the Machinist Trainee program is conducted at Camp Community College (Suffolk, VA). The program is 3 weeks (120 hours), Monday‑Friday, 7:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m. Responsibilities Outside machinists install, maintain, test, and repair a ship’s major mechanical components and systems. Work takes place on naval vessels at various construction stages. Key components include steam turbines, reduction gears, propellers, reactor components, catapults, weapons systems, periscopes, laundry, food service, and refrigeration equipment. Machinists use a variety of tools and machinery ranging from basic hand tools to advanced equipment such as torque wrenches, micrometers, drill presses, optical instruments, mills, portable machines, boring equipment, precision grinders, and lathes. Work often involves various weather conditions, extreme heights on scaffolding or ladders, and small, confined spaces such as tanks and compartments, requiring a strong focus on safety, precision, adaptability, and physical agility. Qualifications Successful completion of the 3‑week unpaid program (120 hours). Willingness to undergo a background investigation and drug screen. Pass a physical agility test. Ability to kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb on a daily basis. Capability to lift at least 40 pounds. Ability to perform overhead work. Availability to work overtime as needed. Clean‑shaven compliance for respirator use. Capacity to work outdoors year‑round in all weather conditions. Experience working at extreme heights. Ability to work in small, tight, confined spaces. Willingness to work any shift.
