The Land Survey Technician supports survey party crew chiefs on a wide range of projects across South Carolina, including transportation, commercial, federal, government, industrial, utility, and warehouse sites. This role combines extensive field work with careful data collection and coordination, helping deliver accurate survey information that supports engineering and geomatics solutions. The position is ideal for a driven, hard-working individual with some surveying experience who enjoys working outdoors, traveling, and contributing to projects that directly impact local communities.
Responsibilities
Locate, review, and research job locations to identify landmarks, physical objects, and significant land changes that could affect survey results.
Supervise and assist the survey crew in the field, helping evaluate priorities and coordinate and organize daily work efforts.
Monitor the quality and standard of work being performed and perform necessary field calculations based on completed work.
Support the maintenance, care, and proper use of instruments and equipment to ensure reliability and accuracy.
Verify that angles, distances, and other collected measurements are accurate and conform to applicable regulations and standards.
Coordinate survey findings with engineering personnel, clients, and other project stakeholders to ensure alignment and clarity.
Research previous survey evidence, maps, deeds, physical evidence, and other records to obtain data needed for current surveys.
Assist in determining methods and procedures for establishing or reestablishing survey control points.
Keep accurate notes, records, and sketches that clearly describe work performed in the field.
Complete daily logs and expense reports in a timely and accurate manner.
Complete company and client safety forms and help ensure all crew members follow established safety procedures.
Consult with computer operators and review the final production of survey work to confirm accuracy and completeness.
Use and care for survey tools and field equipment for measuring, sighting, and leveling in accordance with best practices.
Operate survey equipment such as Total Station/Data Collector, Level, and various Global Positioning System (GPS) methods for data collection.
Perform data collection for topographic surveys and construction stakeout activities as required by project needs.
Essential Skills
High school diploma or GED.
0–1 years of surveying experience, with at least some hands-on experience in land surveying.
Familiarity with commonly used surveying terms and concepts.
Proficiency in the use and care of survey tools and field equipment used for measuring, sighting, and leveling.
Familiarity with and proficiency in operating survey equipment such as Total Station/Data Collector, Level, and various GPS methods.
Ability to work comfortably and safely outdoors in all weather conditions and environments, including heat, cold, uneven terrain, and exposure to insects.
Willingness and ability to travel as required for project assignments.
Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with crew members, engineers, and other stakeholders.
Valid driver's license with an acceptable motor vehicle record.
Ability to pass a background check.
Ability to pass a drug test.
Technical and behavioral traits including being steady, helpful, analytical, a problem solver, methodical, consistent, detail-oriented, precise, and structured.
Ability to work independently when required while also functioning effectively as part of a team.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Surveying experience is a plus beyond the minimum requirement.
Experience with land surveying in transportation, commercial, industrial, or government settings is beneficial.
Experience with data collection, Total Station operations, topography, and construction stakeout is advantageous.
Interest in continuous improvement and professional development through mentoring, training, and online courses.

Work Environment
This role is primarily field-based and involves extensive outdoor work year-round, including walking long distances through varied terrain in extreme heat and cold. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with overtime earned depending on project load; surveyors typically work an average of 50–60 hours per week. The technician reports daily to the Charleston office to meet with the surveying team, receive project assignments, and coordinate travel and field activities. Approximately 50% travel is involved, and the technician must be willing to travel as necessary for projects across South Carolina and potentially to other regions. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $22.00/hr.
