OverviewWe are seeking an experienced Senior Software Developer to join our engineering team, specializing in Healthcare Insurance and Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) solutions for medical insurance operations. This role requires deep technical expertise in C# and the Microsoft technology stack, combined with proven experience in healthcare transaction processing, third-party system integrations, and modern AI-assisted development practices. You'll play a critical role in building and maintaining the systems that process healthcare transactions for our clients while integrating with external partners and leveraging cutting-edge development tools. Ideally local to the San Diego area.How you'll make an impactDesign, develop, and maintain EDI transaction processing systems for healthcare claims, eligibility verification, and remittance advice (835, 837, 270/271, 276/277 transactions)Build and enhance C#/.NET applications supporting medical insurance carrier operations and benefits administrationDesign and implement RESTful API integrations with third-party healthcare systems, clearinghouses, pharmacy benefit managers, and partner platformsLead technical implementation of HIPAA-compliant EDI solutions and ensure regulatory adherenceCollaborate with business analysts, product owners, and healthcare operations teams to translate requirements into technical solutionsManage stakeholder relationships across IT, claims operations, provider networks, compliance, client services, and external integration partnersParticipate in full SDLC activities including requirements gathering, design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenanceLeverage modern AI development tools to enhance productivity and code qualityProvide technical leadership and mentorship to development team membersTroubleshoot and resolve complex EDI transaction issues, API integration challenges, and system connectivity problemsOptimize system performance and implement best practices for scalability and reliabilityContribute to architecture decisions and technology strategy for our healthcare platformAbout You7+ years of software development experience with C# and .NET Framework/.NET CoreExperience with AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or similar platformsStrong experience designing and implementing RESTful APIs and third-party system integrationsProficiency with modern development tools and practices including Git, CI/CD pipelines, containerization, and cloud-native architectures3+ years of hands-on experience with healthcare EDI transactions (X12 standards: 837, 835, 270/271, 276/277, 834)Strong proficiency in the Microsoft technology stack: ASP.NET Core, SQL Server, Azure servicesDeep understanding of HIPAA regulations and healthcare data security requirementsProven experience with full Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) methodologies including Agile/ScrumDemonstrated ability to manage stakeholder expectations and communicate technical concepts to non-technical audiencesExperience with EDI translation software and healthcare clearinghouse integrationsStrong problem-solving skills and attention to detail in complex healthcare data environmentsExcellent written and verbal communication skillsPreferred QualificationsHands-on experience with Claude Code, Gemini, Copilot, Cursor, or other AI development assistantsExperience with On-Prem and cloud platforms (Azure preferred) and microservices architectureKnowledge of HL7, FHIR, or other healthcare interoperability standardsExperience with message queuing systems (Azure Service Bus, RabbitMQ)Proficiency with modern frontend frameworks (React, Angular, or Vue.js)Familiarity with claims adjudication systems, benefits administration platforms, and insurance carrier operationsExperience with automated testing frameworks (xUnit, NUnit, Moq) and test-driven developmentBackground in healthcare payer systems or medical billing operationsUnderstanding of VEBA (Voluntary Employees' Beneficiary Association) plans and benefits administrationExperience with monitoring and observability tools (Application Insights, Datadog, Grafana)Certifications in Microsoft technologies or healthcare IT standardsTechnical EnvironmentLanguages: C#, SQL, PowerShell, JavaScript/TypeScriptFrameworks: .NET 6+, ASP.NET Core Web API, Entity Framework CoreDatabases: SQL Server, Azure SQL, RedisTools: Visual Studio, Visual Studio Code, Azure DevOps, Git, DockerCloud: Microsoft Azure (App Services, Functions, Service Bus, Storage, Key Vault)EDI: X12 transaction sets, EDI translation enginesAI Tools: Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, and other AI-assisted development platformsAPI: REST, OpenAPI/Swagger, OAuth 2.0, JWT authenticationCompensation and benefitsAt Gallagher, we believe supporting our colleagues goes far beyond the role itself.
